Victory ! . “Nike” Verb = to win in the face of obstacles, be victor, conquer, overcome, prevail Noun = Victory!. Victory ! . Two aspects to the concept of overcoming. One is automatic for all believers. One is earned, for those who finish their lives faithful to Jesus Christ. Victory ! .

  1. Victory! “Nike” Verb = to win in the face of obstacles, be victor, conquer, overcome, prevail Noun = Victory!

  2. Victory! Two aspects to the concept of overcoming. One is automatic for all believers. One is earned, for those who finish their lives faithful to Jesus Christ.

  3. Victory! A similar pattern is seen in the idea of inheriting. Romans 8:16-17 Inheritance with God is unconditional Co-heirship with Christ is conditional 2 Timothy 2:11-13 A B B A

  5. Victory! The Beatitudes – Mt. 5:1-12 These qualities are not true of all believers. The rewards are not true of all believers.

  6. Victory! All believers are heirs of God. We all get into the Kingdom of God. We all inherit eternal life. But not all inherit the same things.

  7. Victory! We shape our future by the way we live today!

  8. Victory! All believers have overcome in one sense. 1 John 5:4-5 But, the overcoming of Revelation 2-3 is clearly linked to merit, to behavior, to good works. As such, it is conditional, not automatic for all believers!

  9. Victory! Revelation 2:25-27 …hold fast what you have till I come… …and keeps my works until the end… …as I also received from My Father…

  10. Victory! Last week…Rev. 2:4-5 “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else…” Clearly, a merit based issue!

  11. Victory! Likewise, the reward was not for all believers, nor was it a means of getting eternal life. Revelation 2:7 “To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”’

  12. Victory! Rev. 2:8-11 Smyrna – The Persecuted Church Myrrh = a common perfume Used in the anointing oil of the Tabernacle. Also used in embalming dead bodies. Their testimony was sweet aroma to God.

  13. Victory! Rev. 2:8-11 The presentation of Christ is of One who is eternal, who has conquered death! Rev. 2:8

  14. Victory! The condemnation… (cue crickets)

  15. Victory! The commendation – 2:9 • Good works • Enduring difficulty • Struggling with material poverty • Opposed by Satanically-motivated Jews

  16. Victory! The encouragement – 2:10 They were about to go through a time of testing. They were not to be afraid, instead even to be faithful until death.

  17. Victory! The reward – 2:10 “The crown of life” James 1:12 A special reward for those who faithfully endure suffering.

  18. Victory! The reward – 2:10 Crowns in the New Testament: 1 Cor. 9:25 - Imperishable 1 Thess. 2:19 – Crown of rejoicing 2 Tim. 4:6-8 – Crown of righteousness 1 Peter 5:4 – Crown of glory Rev. 4:4 – Crown of gold

  19. Victory! 2:11 “shall not be hurt by the second death” They may have to suffer the first, but have no need to fear the second.
