India-Pakistan Relations: Conflicts and Changes from 1976 to the 1990s

This overview explores the turbulent India-Pakistan relations from the late 20th century, focusing on significant conflicts. Despite the Indo-Pakistani wars in the 1970s, tensions persisted, culminating in the Siachen War of 1984 over territorial disputes in Kashmir, which saw a cease-fire established in 2003. The late 1990s marked the start of nuclear testing by both nations, further straining relations. The Kargil War in 1999 reignited conflicts in the Kashmir region, illustrating ongoing disputes along the Line of Control.

  1. 20th century india 1976-1990s & surrounding world regions

  2. Relations & changes in world region • Within the Indian subcontinent, most of the conflict with other regions has been with Pakistan… even after the Indo-Pakistani wars of the 1970s, not much has changed • 1984: The Siachen War began as military response to conflict over the Siachen Glacier territory in Kashmir; a cease-fire went into effect in 2003 • In the late 90s, nuclear testing began in both India and Pakistan, further souring relations between the 2 countries • In 1999, the Kashmir region yet again proves a point of conflict between India & Pakistan, setting off the Kargil War, within the district and along the Line of Control– a de facto border designated as the line between the 2 countries
