With this program, we wish to underscore the long standing relationship between the University of Groningen and the people of Indonesia. • We aim to further enrich the dialogue between scholars of our two countries, especially to further the research conducted by emerging scholars, future leaders of Indonesia, committed to the universal ideals of democracy and good governance.

Effective and efficient, transparent and accountable, good governance will continue to serve Indonesia well on its path of growth, social justice, and peace. • We have developed an inter-disciplinary program on good governance here at the University of Groningen, bridging theoretical and methodological approaches from international relations, economics, sociology, law, and geography. We want you to be part of our team.

  6. SInGA PhD research at the University of Groningen What are you interested in conducting your dissertation research on? We offer inter-disciplinary supervision for your research, from a wide range of fields.

The University of Groningen, in cooperation with its Graduate Schools, has designed an integrated program for PhD students from Indonesia participating in the SPIRIT program on ‘Good Governance.’ • A key objective is to offer advanced training in the integration of theoretical and empirical perspectives on good governance, especially suitable for civil servants moving into leadership positions within the national ministries of Indonesia.

  24. Training Programme Year 2 Publishing in English Profiling in Academia Writing an advanced research proposal, social networking Research presentation: Interchangeprogramme Short presentations of 10 minutes of the innovative features of the dissertation.

  25. Training Programme Year 3 Dissertation design: Presentation of the revised research design, list of contents and bibliography of the dissertation before a forum of PhDs and staff members, prior to the final writing phase of completing the dissertation.

  26. Time Schedule for SPIRIT Indonesia Groningen (SInGA) • Pre-departure Period: April-August 2012, Indonesia:  ●Administrative preparation by the Ministry and the University ●Initial research proposal prepared, 3-5 pages ●English language pre-departure test

Year 1: September 2012- May 2013, Groningen ●Preparatory courses and training from various Graduate Schools of the University of Groningen. ●Intensive English language training, focused on writing academic English ●A solid research proposal shall be prepared by May 1, approximately 30-40 pages, including research question, scientific and social significance of the research, research design and methodology, initial literature review, and initial analysis. Prepare a detailed research time plan for completing the dissertation. ●Qualifying Examination by Groningen Graduate School (Behaviour and Social Sciences, Spatial Sciences, or Humanities), to be made by June 1, based on English test and initial research proposal.

  28. Year 2: May 2013-May 2014, Groningen ●Advanced courses by the Graduate Schools ●Further development of overall dissertation framework, especially research design and methodology, and theoretical framework. ●May 2014-Sept 1, 2014 in Indonesia

Year 3: Sept. 2014-May 2015, Groningen ●Deepening of the dissertation, empirical research, including fieldwork or data collection. ●Completion of an academic article suitable for journal submission or chapter in an edited volume ●May 2015-September 1, 2015 in Indonesia, continuation of empirical research

  30. Year 4: Sept 2015-Sept 2016, Groningen ●Final preparation of the dissertation, full integration of theoretical and empirical findings, and prescriptive recommendations as appropriate for the Indonesian case. ●Valorisation of the dissertation results, through conferences and workshops. Sept 2016: ●Finalisation of the dissertation, oral defense. ●PhD ceremony
