  2. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • While Peter is completing his second sermon (3:11-26), the Jews detain him and John vv. 1, 3 • Thereason? The Sanhedrin was “greatly disturbed” at their preaching a resurrected Jesus v. 2 cp. 2:22-24 3:13-15

  3. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • Jesus had previously warned the apostles re: this type of “treatment” Lk 21:12-13 • Most organizations would collapse in the face of such stiff opposition • Not the N.T. kingdom of Christ…it actually thrived and doubled in size v. 4 cp. 2:41

  4. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • The next day, the Sanhedrin convened v. 5 • Most notably present were Annas & Caiaphas v. 6 cp. Jn 18:12-13, 19-24 • Placing the 2 apostles before them, they demanded to know “by what power” or “in what name” they acted v. 7 cp. vv 9-10

  5. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • Peter & John had to have had a “flashback” • No doubt, they remembered the way this same council had treated Jesus Lk 22:54, 63-71 • No doubt, they also must have remembered the words the Lord Himself had spoken to them Lk 12:13-15

  6. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • Peter replies vv. 8-12 • He was “filled with the Holy Spirit”v. 8 cp. 2:4 • He boldly states the good deed done for the lame man was attributable to Jesus • Peter again repeated 2 major points… v. 10 • The Jews had murdered Jesus

  9. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • The council reacts vv. 13-18 • They observe the apostles’ confidence despite their “lack of training”…yet, they recognize them as “…having been with Jesus” • They had no reply for the miracle done for the lame man now standing in their midst

  10. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • The council reacts vv. 13-18 • They “huddle up” & “strategize” v. 15 • Even though they cannot deny the miracle, they determine a threat to the apostles will stop them from preaching vv. 16-18 • This was nothing other than “Damage Control”

  11. Lesson 29 – Apostles Arrested 4:1-22 • Peter & John react vv. 19-22 • They have no interest in even debating the merits of the council’s “threat” v. 19 • They have a job to do v. 20 • The Sanhedrin follows through with its “politically contrived” decision vv. 21-22

  13. Lesson 29 – A Request 4:23-31 • Upon their release, Peter & John return to their “companions” and report all that had happened to them v. 23 • They all pray together vv. 24-30 • They acknowledge God as Creator v. 24 cp. Ex 20:11 Psa 146:6

  14. Lesson 29 – A Request 4:23-31 • They all pray together vv. 24-30 • They acknowledge God also knew man would reject Jesus vv. 25-26 cp. Psa 2:1-2 • They admit the recent events re: Jesus before the Jews, Herod, & Pilate as the fulfillment of this prophecy vv. 27-28

  15. Lesson 29 – A Request 4:23-31 • They all pray together vv. 24-30 • They ask for boldness, confidence to continue preaching the gospel with miraculous help vv. 29-30 • What would most have requested? • Remove the threat…get rid of the Jews!!

  16. Lesson 29 – A Request 4:23-31 • God answers their prayer v. 31 • The place where they were “was shaken” • They all “were filled with the Holy Spirit” • NOTE: a strong indication this was only the 12 apostles…not all the believers • A “reconfirmation” God was with them

  17. Lesson 29 – Early Disciples 4:32-37 • The congregation of early believers were “…of one heart & soul” v. 32a • They did not even view their possessions as their own…they shared with any brethren who had need vv. 32b, 34-35 • The apostles continued to “witness” v. 33

  18. Lesson 29 – Early Disciples 4:32-37 • Of particular note was a disciple named Joseph vv. 36-37 • A believer of Cyprian birth • The apostles had “nicknamed” him Barnabas • He was apparently a great “encourager” • He sold land, gave money to needy brethren
