Background and History of Marsville • Marsville Video : • Sponsor - Challenger Center for Space Science Education and the Educational Information and Resource Center. • Held May 1992 with students in three counties near Cleveland. • Commemorated International Space Year • Students planned a simulated colony on Mars. • What is Marsville? • Students placed in simulated landing on Mars • Students design life systems that are required to survive on another planet. • Culminating activity: Marsville station (small pods divided by 8X10 ft plastic walls) • Students discuss process of problem solving (celestial questials and What If…?   6. National Science Standard: Science as Inquiry Science as inquiry requires students to combine processes and scientific knowledge with scientific reasoning and critical thinking to develop their understanding of science. www.eirc.org/g&t Helping People Help Kids

MARSVILLE SYSTEM ASSIGNEMENT • Steps in creating system: • Define requirements of system • Consider how that system operates on Earth. • Research limitations or opportunities posed by Mars • Teams work together to decide on how system will operate and what it will contain • System model construction considerations: • Created with greatest good and least harm ideals • Does not need to function physically • Must include 3 Mars facts, 1 Mars Riddle • Meet size requirements • Teams should be prepared to discuss how model should function on Link Up Day EIRC’s Gifted & Talented Service www.eirc.org/g&t Helping People Help Kids

Systems Assignment (Research) • Student driven research • Students use Mars ABCs and other resources • Guiding principle: Simple but sustainable • Teacher acts as coach • Student roles: researchers, builders, recorders, artists • Brainstorming helpful for students to track ideas www.eirc.org/g&t Helping People Help Kids

Systems Assignment (Construction of System) • Student driven ideas for construction of model • Considerations – will school provide materials or will students have to provide their own materials • Student roles: researchers, builders, recorders, artists • Brainstorming – helpful for tracking of ideas • System does not have to physically function • Students should be able to explain how system functions • Three Mars Facts and 1 Mars Riddle should be included somewhere on the system. • Will bring this system model to Link-Up Day Helping People Help Kids www.eirc.org/g&t

  12. MARSVILLE HABITAT Process: Three teams from various schools will form one habitat. Mini Habitat Activity (thanks to Mary Aruffo from Glassboro for this idea) Helping People Help Kids www.eirc.org/g&t

MARSVILLE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Goal: Simulates cooperative nature of problem-solving Schools will need to communicate to provide components needed to create the habitat as well as a name and design for the habitat. • EIRC office will provide school and team information so students will be able to communicate prior to Link-Up Day • Face-to-face meetings are not permitted. • Two forms of communication required. • Moodle will be one possible setup for students as communication tool. www.eirc.org/g&t Helping People Help Kids

MARSVILLE LINK-UP DAY ACTIVITIES LUNCH IN MARSVILLE • Nutritionally complete • At least 10 oz. fluid per team member • Total weight of food and liquid is 22 oz. • Maximum of 5 zip-lock gallon food storage bags • Each team’s lunch pre-weighed as part of pre-mission tasks • After lunch, remains are weighed • Consider nutritional value of food • Practice weighing food • Consider best use of space • Avoid wasting food EIRC’s Gifted & Talented Service www.eirc.org/g&t Helping People Help Kids

  16. CELESTIAL QUESTIAL Goal: Students have opportunity to share their research and problem solving with other students. Definitions: Celestial: of or relating to the sky (Merriam Webster Central) Quest: a journey made in search of something Process • Students will be journeying to other habitats to learn how other systems operate on Mars. • Students will create a riddle based on Mars facts. • System must be labelled with Mars facts and with riddle. • Students will prepare bonus cards to share with other students during Celestial Questial. Celestial Questial Team Member Roles • Questers: Students who will be journeying to other habitats to hear Mars presentations (up to 3 students) • Presenters : Students who will stay in the habitat and explain how their system works. Will share riddle with questers from other teams. (up to 3 students) • Air-Lock Controller: Keeps the air flap closed. Allows questers in and out of the habitat • Timer:Keeps time for the presentations (2 minutes) • Communications Controller: Introduces presenters • Presentations Include: • Presenters Names • Name of school • Explanation of System and how it • functions • Riddle Helping People Help Kids www.eirc.org/g&t

  18. Celestial Questial Bonus Cards Purpose: Another opportunity for students to share research. Given to other teams for correctly answering riddle question. Information for cards: School Name Team Name Considerations: Can use any type of card or card stock Students design Simple or elaborate Need at least 2 cards per number of teams at Link-Up Day Helping People Help Kids www.eirc.org/g&t

  19. MARSVILLE WHAT If…? Scenarios • Goal: Responsible Decision-Making • What If…? Scenario found in manual • Can be given as a homework assignment • Group discussion with brainstorming ideas • Final decision is made at homebase and shared at Link-Up Day • Bring poster or other display for students to share their decision and how they came to that decision • Poster or display should have team name • Other What If….?
