Marks of the Church & Evangelization • One • As the body of Christ, the Church is united as one. • The Church is the tangible presence of God in the world. • Holy • The Church is holy through the presence of the Holy Spirit • The Church is called act on her holiness • Catholic • The Church has the fullness of Christ’s presence and is called to share Him with all people. • Apostolic • Rooted in the apostles life and teachings, the Church is sent on a mission to build the kingdom of God.

Evangelization • To proclaim Christ and the Good News of Salvation to others by our words and actions. • As Christians, we are called to be living icons of Christ. • All the baptized have a responsibility to evangelize by the witness of their lives. • “The Church exists to Evangelize” Pope Paul VI

  4. Situations of Evangelization • “Ad Gentes” – Where Christ and the Gospel are unknown • Within community – Where faith is already active and vibrant • To non-practicing Christians – Where baptized people no longer live the faith or even reject it.

  5. New Evangelization • Re-propose our belief in Christ & Gospel for those who know faith but it holds no interest. • Goal – (re)connecting people with Christ through the community • Context of the New Evangelization • Secularism – society relegates faith to private life • Materialism – focus on material well being over spiritual well being • Individualism – focus on individual over community

  6. Elements of Evangelization • Commit to personal holiness • Boldness & respect • Use of technology • Reach out to people of all ages • Propose Good News • Goal of conversion, not coercion • Evangelizing vs. proselytizing

  7. Reflection Writing Assignment • Please reflect on the following questions and write your answers on a piece of paper: • Which situation(s) of Evangelization do you find yourself in with friends? Family? Other situations? • How can you balance the requirement to evangelize with the requirement to respect the beliefs of others. • How can you be a means of evangelization?

  8. Homework: Due Monday • Ask 3 non-ordained Christians (laity): • What is your mission for God?  Or what is God calling you to do? • What is your mission for the Church?  Or what is the Church calling you to do?

  9. In Class Today • Read articles 45 & 46 in the text book (pages 172-179) • Describe the laity’s participation in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of the Church • What is the domestic church and why is it important? • At least ½ page

Laity and Evangelization • Rite of Baptism (Prayer before anointing) • The God of power and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life.All: Amen.
