  2. What is a Health Center? A SBHC is a “health center, located in a school or on a school campus, that provides onsite comprehensive preventive and primary health services. Services may also include mental health, oral health, ancillary, and supportive services.” (MD SBHC Standards, April 2006, p. 5)

  3. School Based Health Centers in Maryland • Maryland has 61 school based health centers. • 100% treat acute medical problems. • 100% are treating chronic medical problems. • 85% are offering sports physicals • 93% are offering nutritional counseling to combat and prevent obesity. • 81% are offering mental health services. • 46% offer on site oral health services.

  4. Positive Effects of SBHCs • Improved attendance • Improved health status • Enhanced health knowledge/care-seeking • Increased academic performance • Reduced emergency room use • Reduced health expenditures • Reduced behavioral issues

Caroline County School Based Health Centers • Partnership between Choptank Community Health System, Caroline County Public Schools and the Caroline County Health Department. • Somatic, oral and mental health services are provided at GES, FES, RES, CRMS, LMS, CRHS and NCHS. • Oral health services provided at DES and PES.
