  1. Heat: -thermal energy moving from a warmer object to a cooler one -when thermal energy is transferred There are three ways that heat can move: 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation

  2. Conduction – heat is transferred from one particle of matter to another without the movement of matter itself. Ex: A metal spoon in a pot of water being heated on a stove. stove  pot  water  bottom of the spoon  top of the spoon

  3. 2. Convection – heat is transferred by the movement of currents within a liquid or gas. Ex: Pot of boiling water water at the bottom of the pot is heated particles move faster and farther apart heated water rises and cooler water falls to the bottom This creates a convection current – circular motion of hot/cold

  4. 3. Radiation – heat is transferred by electromagnetic waves. • does not require matter to transfer thermal energy. Ex: Feel heat from a bonfire, a heat lamp, or the sun across a distance.
