  2. What is a butterfly? • An insect • Has wings that it uses to fly • Similar to a moth but not the same

  5. Egg The adult female butterfly lays an egg that was fertilized by the male

  6. Caterpillar The egg hatches into a tiny larva or caterpillar. The caterpillar eats and grows a tremendous amount.

  7. Chrysalis Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. The chrysalis usually hangs from tree leaves and is camouflaged to hide from predators.

  8. Adult Butterfly A fully grown butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.

  9. Life of the Butterfly Adult butterflies only live for a short time. They cannot eat, they only drink through their straw-like proboscis. They will fly, mate, and reproduce.
