  4. Epidermis • Outer protective layer of skin • Dead cells on outermost layers • Filled with keratin – hard and water resistant • Innermost layer produces melanin

  5. Dermis • Contains: • Blood vessels • Nerves • Hair follicles • Sweat glands • Oil glands • Muscles • Hypodermis • Contains fat for protection and insulation

  6. Functions of Skin • Temperature regulation • Protection • Sensation • Vitamin production • Excretion

  7. Bones • Axial skeleton • Appendicular skeleton • There are 206 total

  8. Joints • Ligaments – attach bone to bone • Tendons – attach bone to muscle • Bursae – fluid-filled sacs that provide cushion • Cartilage – covers ends of bones
