  1. African Women Food Farmer Initiative (AWFFI) An integral component of the Epicenter Strategy

  2. What is AWFFI? It is a microfinance program which was launched at the 1999 Africa Prize Event. Its purpose is to economically empower rural African women through: • Training • Savings The AWFFI program enables women to both build their skills and increase their incomes so that they may effectively contribute to ending hunger and poverty in their households and communities. • Credit

Microfinance on a Sustainable Basis: In order to ensure that these women have access to credit and savings facilities on a sustainable basis, the ultimate goal of AWFFI is to assist the women to establish and manage their own government-recognized rural bank at the epicenter. This bank is open to everyone in the epicenter, men, women, and even children.

Direct Credit • AWFFI Epicenter Credit Committee=Leadership • Revolving Loan Fund (ideal=min. $20,000) • Savings and training requirements to access loans • Group loans only (subsequent loans dependent on every members’ repaying) • Building good habits (saving, using loans wisely, and repaying on-time)

  6. Since the creation of AWFFI, THP-Africa has disbursed $4,797,966 in loans to 83,621women through the Direct Credit program. The average loan size is $57.

  18. Wakiso Rural Bank (Uganda) • Officially recognized in July 2004. • Growing: Membership has more than tripled since inception. Today there are 797 members. 2005 Audit reveals share capital up 115%, savings balance up 512%, total income up 172%, and net surplus up 229%. • Developing new products (youth savings’accounts) • Recruiting a cashier to assist the manager and planning to open a branch in future. • Earning public acclaim ("Best Cooperative Savings and Credit Society in District" ).
