  4. Historical Perspective • 1912, when Children’s Bureau formed, annual budget was $25,640, chief plus 15 FTEs • 1943 • MCH $5,820,000 • CCS $3,870,000 • Child Welfare $1,510,000 Total $11,200,000

Combating Autism Act Authorizes $168 Million in FY 08 • $114.5 – NIH research into causes, diagnosis, early detection, intervention and treatment • $16.5 – CDC, Surveillance and Research • $37 – HRSA to increase awareness, promote evidence based interventions, reduce barriers to screening & diagnosis, and train professionals to diagnose and provide evidence based interventions

FY 08 Appropriations Report • $37 Million to HRSA for “Autism and other related developmental disorders” • No less than $6 million to continue and expand the Leadership in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs • In addition, an increase of no less than $6 million for research on evidence based practices for interventions for individuals with autism and other Developmental Disabilities (DD), guidelines development and dissemination
