  1. What is Flames? A physical activity and health programme that inspires, motivates and enthuses children to be active.

  2. Who is it for? • Anyone with access to a group of young leaders, eg, • Curriculum teams • HE/FE Tutors • Sports Development Officers • Leisure Services Staff • Young people (14+) with a leadership aspect to their learning, eg, • Btec students • CSLA students • Public service students • Any group of primary-aged children, eg, • Out of school clubs • School pupils • Uniformed groups

  3. How does it work? Learning mentors access FREE Flames resources Learning mentors recruit a cohort of young leaders and local school(s) or community groups Learning mentors deliver cascade training to young leaders Young leaders plan and deliver Flames activity sessions to school(s) or community groups Flames activity festival to celebrate

  4. Flames core messages Young leaders are taught how to build in key messages to increase children and young people’s awareness of physical activity and heart healthy lifestyles. • 60 active minutes each day • Everyone can be excellent at being physically active • Activity can be built up throughout the day • The heart is a muscle and needs to be exercised • Eat 5 fruit and veg a day

  5. Flames festival • Organised and delivered • by young leaders • Mass participation event– • mini ‘Olympics’ • Small scale to large scale, • indoors or outdoors • ‘Opening ceremony’ with VIPs • Mass warm-up and reading of the Flames Oath • Activity circuit based on multi-skill activities • Closing ceremony and awards

Why take part in Flames? • A ready-made flexible programme • Free resources and optional training support • An opportunity to strengthen existing local partnerships and/or build new ones • Sustainable mechanism for the delivery of physical activity opportunities within the community • To date Flames has trained over 30,000 young leaders and an estimated 200,000 children and young people have enjoyed taking part in Flames activities

Inspiring a new generation of young leaders • Vocationally relevant experience in delivering activities to children • A meaningful way of fulfilling volunteering hours • Development of essential leadership and organisation skills • Increases knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver health-related activities • Preparation for employment

Increasing children’s physical activity • Brings learning to life • Opportunity to take part in a large participation event • Offers fun, variety and inclusive • activities • Learning to love being active • Potential for cross-curricular learning • Providing positive role models • Improves behaviour and engagement in other areas of school life
