  2. 1. Course Description • This course will be a general survey of ancient thought and culture in Greek and Roman World. • The concept of Western thought and culture roughly encompasses the poetic, medical, legal, scientific, philosophical, and theological literature of classical world. • The figures and schools we shall be discussing will be Homer, the naturalist movement, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, the Epicureans, and the early Christianity. • No preliminary knowledge is required.

Objectives In this course, students are expected to: • Acquire a basic knowledge of classical western thinkers and their historical backgound. • Become acquainted with basic themes that classical thinkers concerned. • Gain an understanding of their importance to the later history of western civilization.

  6. 3. Requirements • English is the required working language. Attendance and participation in class discussion are expected, as well as completion of the assigned essay. 4. Grading 10% Attendance 30% Special Group Assignments 60% Final essay/exam
