  1. 7.9.1620 • The Swedish king Gustaf II Adolf founded the City of Kokkola on September 7th, 1620 in order to control the trade and other means of livehood along the coast. • The king decided that a tar barrel, with three burning flames coming from both the ends and the plug, should be used as a town seal.

  2. Chydenius and free trade • The City of Kokkola was granted staple rights by the Swedish Parliament in 1765, that is free foreign trade without interference from Stockholm. • Anders Chydenius, the Church Dean of the Kokkola Region, fought in Parliament for the freedom of trade and other social reforms.
