    2. Contest Information For the contest, you should be prepared to compare all types and brands of pizzas. When reading the nutrition facts label, consider calories, total fat, saturated fat, sodium, fiber, and calcium. Remember to make sure you pay attention to serving sizes to make accurate comparisons between pizza products.

    3. Cost Cost varies based on style, ingredients and processing Coupons, sales, and discounts can help with cost Look at serving size and nutritional value on nutrition label when comparing cost A pizza that cost $4 and has 4 servings would cost $1 per serving

    4. Serving Size Serving Size the amount of food that is considered 1 helping for a person Pizzas do not have a uniform serving size. Usually, an individual pizza has a serving size of 1/2 pizza or entire pizza. Larger pizzas often have a serving size of 1/5 pizza. The nutrition facts label lists all the nutrient amounts based on the serving size. Pay special attention to serving sizes, especially how many servings there are in the package.

    8. Calories The FDA recommends that people generally consume no more than 2,000 Calories a day. We call this a 2,000 Calorie Diet. FDA General Guide to Calories (For 1 serving of food) 40 Calories Low 100 Calories Medium 400+ Calories High

    9. Calories Continued Dont forget to look at the number of Calories from fat. The ideal pizza product would have a low amount of Calories from Fat (because too much fat can have negative effects on the body).

    10. Whole Grains Whole grains are important because they give us fiber in our diet Fiber makes you feel full faster We need 25-38 g of fiber each day so look for pizzas with at least 5 g of fiber per serving Pizza crust made with whole wheat flour will provide more fiber

    11. Whole Grains Whole grains are good for you because they contain more nutrients Whole grains have three parts: the bran, germ, and endosperm Bran and Germ contain vitamins and fiber Endosperm has mostly carbohydrates

    12. Whole Grains Whole grains should be listed first or second on ingredients list It should say whole grain flour or whole wheat flour

    13. Total Fat Fat a nutrient that supplies the body with energy; too much fat can lead to health problems For a 2,000 Calorie Diet, no more than 70 grams of fat should be consumed a day. Pizzas usually have high amounts of fat.

    14. Fat Continued One reason pizzas have so much fat is due to the toppings. Meat toppings (sausage, ground beef, bacon, etc.) and extra cheese are high in fat. This adds to the total fat content of the pizza. Healthier topping choices include vegetables, such as tomatoes, black olives, onions, mushrooms, peppers, etc.

Saturated Fat Saturated Fat a type of fat that is saturated with Hydrogen atoms in composition; essentially these fats are solid at room temperature The daily recommended intake of Saturated Fat is 20 grams. Choose pizzas that are low in saturated fat and include low-fat cheese (1%, 2% or part skim) instead of regular cheese

    16. Sodium Sodium (salt) a nutrient that occurs in foods naturally in small amounts, but is usually added during food processing for preservation Consuming high amounts of sodium can lead to high blood pressure. The recommended daily intake of Sodium is 1500 milligrams.

    17. Sodium Continued A low-sodium diet is suggested to ensure that high blood pressure will not be developed. Sodium in pizza can range from 500 mg to 1000mg per serving!!!!!! Check labels and look for pizzas low in sodium

    18. Calcium Calcium a nutrient needed for keeping bones and teeth strong Calcium is NOT produced by the body; therefore it must be consumed through foods. Dairy products are one of the best sources of calcium. You should have 3 cups of milk or foods made from milk each day

    19. Calcium Continued Pizzas can be a good Calcium source due to the amount of cheese. The pizza needs to be made with low-fat or part-skim milk cheese to ensure Calcium without high amounts of fat. Read the ingredients!! A pizza with 20% or more daily value of Calcium is good source.

Fruit and Vegetables Pizzas can also be a good source of fruit and vegetables which have lots of vitamins and minerals Choose pizzas with toppings such as green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and spinach to help lower fat content and provide you with needed vitamins and minerals You want to eat 100% of the Daily value of each vitamin and mineral every day

Review of Pizzas Serving Size amount for 1 person Calories low amount of Calories from Fat Fat want low amount & healthy toppings Saturated Fat want low amount Sodium want low amount Calcium want high amount & want cheese made with low-fat milk Whole Grains-want whole grain flour or whole wheat flour on ingredient list

    22. Reminders Look at Nutrition Facts Label to find amount of Calories, Fat, Saturated Fat, Sodium, and Calcium per serving. Read the ingredients to look for low-fat cheese and whole grains Dont forget to compare serving size vs cost

    23. Check Your Knowledge Which pizza is the better buy? Joes Pizza - $4.00. Number of servings: 8. Serving size: 1 slice (20 g) Moes Pizza - $5.00. Number of servings: 6. Serving size: 1 slice (45 g) What food could you add to your pizza or have as a side to get all 5 food groups if you are eating a slice of pepperoni pizza? If wheat flour is the first ingredient listed on the label, and cheese is the second ingredient, is the pizza a good source of whole grains?
