  1. PROPOSAL FOR THE INTERDISCIPLINARY VICTORIA LAND COASTAL PROGRAMME Silvia Olmastroni, Prof. Silvano Focardi Department of Environmental Science University of Siena, Italy SEABIRD AND SEAL ECOLOGY This proposal is based on 5 years of biomonitoring and documentation of penguin and skua populations nesting near the Italian Base of Terra Nova Bay

  2. TOPICS Distribution and ecology of seabird and seal species along the Victoria Land Coastal High Latitudinal Gradient Methods: • Population and density estimation using the Italica/Icebreaker • Helicopter survey to detect nesting/nursery sites • Census and mapping of reproduction sites by using aerophotography, visual censuses GPS survey GIS elaboration of data • Theme maps of seabird and seal distribution along the Victoria Land Environmental Factors which may affect species distribution have to be taken into consideration and the following data are to be collected: SEAICE EXTENSION and ICE CONDITION CLIMATE PRESENCE, FEATURES and ROLE of POLYNYAS: satellite tracking experiments to be continued for penguins and carried out for other seabird and seal species Standard Methodologies are required to be applied in different sites as (e.g.) APMP (Adélie Penguin Monitoring Program), APIS (Antarctic Pack Ice Seals), Marine Ecology of Birds in the Ross Sea (Ainley et al., 1984). D. G. Ainley, E. F. O’Connor, R.J. Boekelheide, 1984 - The Marine Ecology of birds in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Ornithological Monographs no. 32. The American Ornithologist Union, 97 pp.
