  2. Do Now • Take out a piece of lined paper. Write your name at the top. • In 6 lines (with at least 5 words on each line) tell me as much about Animal Farm (plot, characters, historical context, etc.) as you can remember. Use complete sentences. • You have five minutes.

  3. Review • Pass back final exams. • Look over mistakes. Ask questions. • If you’d like to set up a one-on-one meeting to discuss the exam or your progress in this course, see me after class. • Collect. These will be kept in your writing portfolio.

  4. Objectives • Introduce Essential Questions. • Discuss rise and growth of British Empire. Reflect on implications of imperialism. • Apply tools for reading image-based texts

  5. Essential questions • What makes an Empire? What is Imperialism? • Empire: A group of nations ruled over by a monarch, emperor, or government • Imperialism: The formation of an Empire based on a relationship of domination and subordination(Inequality) • What is Imperialism’s relationship to Power? • To what extent does Imperialism shape, confirm, and/or redefine notions of “British-ness”? • What are the implications of Imperialism? How do these implications continue to resonate today?

  7. Reading Image-Based Texts • What is an image-based text? • Maps, cartoons, advertisements • Why would is it important to develop the tools to analyze these resources • The following slide shows a map (“Imperial Federation, Map of the World Showing the Extent of the British Empire”) from 1886. • On a piece of paper, write 5 lines (with at least 5 words on each line) making observations of this map (images, words, designs, etc)

  8. Homework • Complete political cartoon packet. • Write down observations. What do you see? • What is the main idea or message expressed in this image? • Who is the primary audience for this piece? How do you know?
