World War I saw groundbreaking developments in military technology, drastically changing warfare. The Gatling gun, introduced by the U.S. in 1862, became a formidable force and could fire between 400-600 rounds per minute with a crew of 4-6 men. British-made tanks, although slow at 3 mph, provided cover for troops crossing No Man's Land. The Germans introduced devastating artillery, including the massive Big Bertha. Chemical warfare, led by the French with tear gas, forced the invention of gas masks. Aircraft became essential, with pilots like the Red Baron leading the way in aerial battles.
