  1. Random fact of the day: M+M's were invented so soldiers could eat candy without getting their hands sticky 5.3 This logic building problem is a TEAM activity. Lucky Charms is offering a free leprechaun to anyone who sends in enough boxtops. Jess and Courtney both want a leprechaun, but Jess needs 7 more boxtops and Courtney needs one more. They thought of combining their tops, but they still won’t have enough. How many boxtops are needed for one leprechaun?

  2. Do work

  3. Random fact of the day: By licking a stamp you consume 1/10 of a calorie 5.4 This logic building problem is a SOLO activity. There are 15 bottles of Pepsi on the shelf in the general store. Because of the humidity, all of the labels lose their stickiness and fall off. If you were to pick up each label and reapply them at random, what is the expected number of correctly labeled bottles?

  5. Do work……again

  6. Random fact of the day: Interstate highway system requires that one mile in every five must be straight. These straight sections are useable as airstrips in times of war or other emergencies. 5.5 Today’s logic builder is a TEAM activity:You are almost done with your shift as a Brookfield patrol officer when you get called to a hit and run accident. Apparently a red truck hit a parked car and drove away. There are 4 witnesses but each one gives you a different license plate number. The plates they tell you are: 693PAT 795LAE 243PMY 681GKT Your laptop only has enough battery power to perform one license plate lookup, which plate number do you choose? Why?

  7. What equations have we discovered to date?

  8. What equations have we discovered to date? • Today we will use our prior knowledge to create a new linear equation to use when presented with very specific given data.

  9. Problem of the day • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unca1QR3nLs&feature=related

  10. Problem of the day • You are an Entomologist for the DEP, and have been given the information on the following pages to study.

  11. Problem of the day

  12. Problem of the day • There are a few problems however…

  13. Problem of the day • There are a few problems however… • Due to yearly data variance in years past, the graph has only one reliable data point.

  14. Problem of the day • The only reliable point lies at ( 95, 3 ) • To ensure quality research, this is the only point you are authorized to use in your analysis.

  15. Problem of the day • You do have some help however….

  16. Problem of the day • You do have some help however…. • Graphical analysis by the DEP has determined the bee population's to be declining at one million bees every fifteen years

  17. Problem of the day • Come up with an efficient, reliable, and mathematically accurateequation that can predict the fate of our honey bee population

  18. Problem of the day Reliable point: ( 95, 3 )Population declining @ 1 million per 15 years

  19. Problem of the day

  20. Problem of the day • Use your equation to predict the bee population for 2020. • How might this affect your bee-utiful little world?

  21. Point-Slope Equation • Created by algebraically changing the formula for slope • Use when given:Slope and a point m ( x1, y1 )

  22. Do work

  23. Tell me the four equations we have learned so far. • What is ‘needed’ in order for us to use each one? Why/when would we use them?

  24. What formula do you use if you are: • Given: m=3 , (4 , 6) • Given: ( 1, 3) , (5, 7) • Given: m=1/2 , ( 0, 8) • Given: m=2/3, b=-3 • Given: m=4, (-2, -6) • Given m=2, ( 2, 4), ( 4, 8)
