  2. timeline • 1843 – James Douglas begins construction of Fort Victoria • 1846 –United States take possession of the Oregon Territory south of the 49th parallel • 1858– Colony of British Columbia is formed& Fraser Canyon War • 1860 - CaribooGold Rush begins • 1862- Construction of Cariboo Road begins • 1866- Vancouver Island and British Columbia are joined • 1868 - Victoria is declared capital of B.C. • 1871 - British Columbia joins Confederation • 1884 - Vancouver is chosen as the CPR terminus • 1885- Royal Commission on Chinese Immigration to B.C.

  3. Big ideas • Conflict over the Oregon Territory – who wants it and why? • Border issues: Fort Vancouver, Fort Victoria • Douglas Treaties • Gold Rush – impact on society, economy • Causes and effects of BC Confederation • Contributions of the Chinese to the CPR

  4. 6.1 • Why was the OT hot commodity? • Settlement and resources (fur) • Who wanted it and why? • HBC & Britain(monopoly, fur) • Russians (fur; in exchange for food from HBC farmers, they agreed not to operate South of St. Rupert) • USA (population growth & manifest destiny) • Simpson and the fur trade along the coast • Establishment of Fort Van – Chief Factor John McLoughlin • Polk & 49th parallel – results? Who did this upset? • McLoughlin & Simpsons’ views on the Americans differed – how?

  5. 6.1 cont’d • Simpson not satisfied w/ operations along the coast – orders the shutdown of all HBC forts along coast except one  how did McLoughlin react? • James Douglas, Chief Factor at Fort Van ordered by Simpson to establish new depot – Fort Victoria • Border issues – James Polk (54-40-or fight) = 49th parallel agreement • Crown colony of Van. Isld created in 1848 – why? • More British presence in the area than just HBC • James Douglas = gov. of this colony; discouraged American settlement • Douglas Treaties – FN surrender land and get 2pounds (~$4) per family/year & retain hunting + fishing rights on their land

  6. 6.2 • 1848 – Gold 1st discovered along Sacremento R, CAL… by the mid1950s, it was mined out= unemployed miners, nowhere to go • 1857 – Gold found in the Thompson R – Douglas tried to keep it a secret (2 reasons) – why? • Feared disruption a Gold Rush might cause • Feared US annexation • By 1858, how many miners mining along Thompson and Fraser rivers? • 10000 men • Fraser Canyon War – what was it? • Fall of 1858, several gold miners were killed by a group of Salish men who were revenging an attack on one of their women • Some wanted annihilation of the Salish, others wanted peaceful resolution (this is what happened)… Douglas worried b/c they had organized and acted on their own = annexation fear

  7. 6.2 • Colony of BC created in 1858 w/ Douglas as gov. • Cariboo Wagon Road – what was it? problem? • 1860 Gold discovered on Quesnel R. – no raods, difficult travel  Douglas ordered construction of CWR (Yale-Litton-Quesnel-Barkerville) • 650km long, cost $750 000; finished in 1865 (GR in decline) • Barkerville – legacy? • Life = difficult to get supplies in and out = expensive • People = CPR brought in lots of ppl & therefore, infrastructure and town-amenities; Chinese = general store; Black settlers = barber shop; German women = saloons, Hurdy-Gurdy girls • Burned down in 1868, quickly rebuilt; 1870s gold decline = ghost town and eventually, tourist attraction

  8. 6.3 • Causes of Confed – what were they? • Dissatisfaction w/ Douglas’ complete control of gov’t • End of Cariboo Gold Rush = decline in pop  less tax $ • Colony of Van Isld = almost $300, 000 debt • Colony of BC = $1 000 000 debt (CWR) • Banks refused to lend them more $ • Colonies united on Aug 6th,1866 = BC • Problems still persistent • 3 diff views on Confed – what were they? • Confederationists (pro), Anti-Confederationists (maintain ties w/ Brit, but distrust of the rest of CAN), Annexationists (trade) • FN ppl not asked their opinion • GovSeymor (strong anti-Confed) dies, replaced by J.Mac’s buddy – Anthony Musgrave

  9. 6.3 cont’d • BC joins Confed (July 20, 1871)– how did it happen? • Musgrave co-opted (brought them together based on common interests – CPR) Anti-Confed + Annex.

  10. 6.4 • Where were immigrants coming from (1820s-)? • Kanakas – 1st non-Euro immigrants to BC (worked in HBC, farmers, Hastings Mill – Vancouver) • Black citizens of San Francisco escaping slavery; barber shops; militia unit • Jewish immigrants (1858 – 1st community in BC), GR, business • Chinese – harsh treatment -- $1 a day, 1000’s died (CPR), no $ to go home, head tax
