  1. How To Prevent Violence

  2. MORB Training All staff are required to take a one-day onsite course called Management Of Resistive Behaviour (MORB) Training. You should sign up for the next available course. This course will help you recognize escalating behavior, give you the tools to help de-escalate situations and to learn strategies to keep yourself safe.

  3. Responding to Threat of Violence or Violence If there is a threat of violence and/or physical assault: • Call Security (dial 5555)or call a Code White (dial 888) or have someone nearby call immediately. If person has a weapon call Code Silver by dialing 888 • Explain the situation and your location to the operator. Security or the Code White Team will then be dispatched. If a Code Silver, police will be called immediately. • Don’t wait until the situation is “out of control” before calling security or a Code White (see Code White on next slide) • Where a situation becomes violent and is not well-controlled, or there is believed to be “willful intent to harm”, the SMGH Security need to be contacted by calling (5555) who in turn will call the police if necessary. • Security can do additional patrolling in potentially threatening situations; just being present can diffuse a situation.

  4. Code White Is an organized team response to bring immediate assistance to employees confronted with a potentially violent situation. Call Code White when you witness or are involved with an individual who is: • Threatening, harassing, or being verbally abusive to you or another individual • Attempting to harm themselves or others • Displaying threatening behaviour that is escalating • Refusing to leave hospital property when requested When in doubt, call Code White “888”! It is better to have unnecessary support, than to have no support if it is needed.

  5. Code Silver Code Silver is a planned response to ensure the safety of all health care workers, patients and visitors at the hospital when an individual is in possession of (and threatening the use of) a weapon with the intent to kill; and a police response is required.

  6. Quiz 2 • What number do you dial when you want to call a Code White? • 911 • 0 • 888 • What number do you call to get security? • 1234 • 5555 • 4321
