This is why the Kenmore West Business Department provides a wide array of business courses and special programs to help our students obtain necessary job skills, and make informed choices as consumers. Here are several courses you might want to consider taking:

  3. Marketing/Ownership:Sports, Fashion, and More! • This exciting course will appeal to students who are considering a career in business ownership, marketing, or management • Full year course—1 credit

  4. Business, Sports & Entertainment Law • Learn about the law, how it affects businesses, and how it affects you • Explore various careers in business law—sports agent, civil litigators, corporate lawyers, etc… • This may be used as a fifth unit in a five unit Social Studies sequence • Full year—1 Credit

  5. Personal Law • This is a basic introduction to the law as it applies to YOU! • One semester—1/2 Credit

  6. Career and Financial Management “YOU and YOUR money!” • Explore a variety of careers • Learn the skills necessary for success in the workplace—interviewing, résumé writing, etc… • Learn to manage your money—banking, insurance, buying a car, how to save for the future, etc… • Study Skills and Essential Life Skills! • Full Year—1 Credit

  7. Financial Literacy and Careers • Can’t fit Career Financial Management into your schedule?? • This is the half year version • The Study Skills portion, which is included in the full-year course, is NOT included in this half-year offering • One Semester—1/2 Credit

  8. Keyboarding &Personal Documents • Keyboard Mastery • Properly format documents—reports, term papers, letters, memos, résumés, and outlines • Microsoft Word • One Semester—1/2 Credit

  9. Microsoft Office & the Internet • Microsoft Word • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft Access • Microsoft PowerPoint • Internet and you get a district E-mail account • Full Year—1 Credit

  10. Keyboarding / Microsoft Office • This course takes the two half year courses previously mentioned and combines them to a full year course that is essential for college and the workplace • Keyboard Mastery • Properly format documents—reports, term papers, letters, memos, résumés, outlines, tables and much more • Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint • Internet and you get a district E-mail account • Full Year—1 Credit

  11. Classes for Math Credit • After you have… • Passed Algebra • Passed Sophomore Geometry **You can take either Business Math OR Accounting to earn your third unit in math…

  12. Business Math • Excellent course covering practical everyday mathematics • Topics include: • Banking—checking and saving • Wages and overtime pay • Buying a car • Getting your first place • Insurance—car, home, health, etc… • Taxes, Borrowing money and much more!! • Full Year—1 Credit

  13. Accounting • Learn to use accounting information and analyze financial data • This is a must have course for any student planning on going to college for anything business related • After completing this course, you will be qualified to obtain an entry-level accounting clerk position • Full Year—1 Credit

  14. Web Design 1 • The course starts out with learning the basics of the Internet and Web page design • Learn to design and publish unique professional Web pages using: • HTML • Microsoft FrontPage • Microsoft PhotoDraw • Windows Movie Maker • One Semester—1/2 Credit

  15. Web Design 2 • Learn to design and publish unique high quality professional Web pages using: • Macromedia Flash MX • Macromedia Dreamweaver MX • Macromedia Fireworks MX • Windows Movie Maker • One Semester—1/2 Credit **For the full Web Design experience it is recommended to sign up for Web 1 and Web 2

  16. Desktop Publishing • Create flyers, brochures, newsletter, and promotional materials • Use state-of-the-art desktop publishing software, including: • Adobe InDesign • Microsoft Publisher • Microsoft PhotoDraw • Utilize technology such as: scanners, digital cameras, and printers • One Semester—1/2 Credit

  17. Advanced Office / MOS Certification • Use the advanced functions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint • Take practice exams for Microsoft Office Specialist Certification • This is designed as an “AP” style course • Full Year—1 Credit

  18. Internship Program • Work side-by-side with a mentor and gain real life work experience in the career of your choice • Looks great on your résumé • Students must provide their own transportation to the work site • Students are dismissed early from school three days a week and attend Internship classes twice a week during last period • One Semester—1 Credit

  19. Work-Study Program • This program is an ideal opportunity for seniors to complete their high school curriculum while earning a meaningful income and gaining valuable work experience • Students are dismissed early from school • Full Year—1½ Credits • Minimum of 400 work hours

  20. Speaker Series • Guest speakers from the business and education community are invited to inform KW business students on current trends in the real world • As a business student you will really benefit from this great educational experience • The series runs from September to June

  21. Business Honor Society of New York State (BMHS) • BMHS recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in a high school Business / Marketing program • Students are recognized for their success at senior awards night • See any Business teacher for more information!!
