  1. The Impact Factors of Growth and Development Chapter 2 YaO-Rongying

  2. Chapter 2 There are various of factors influencing children growth and development. It can be divided into : * genetic factors * environmental factors

  3. Chapter 2 The genetic factors decide the potential.

  4. Chapter 2 The environmental factors decide the reality.

  5. Chapter 2 The growth and development of children is resulted ofthe inter-action of genetic and environmental factors.

  6. One of the main tasks of child and adolescent health is: To investigate which factors may promote, and which factors may disturb the normal growth and development. And then to take advantage of positive factors, eliminate negative ones, and bring the growth potential into well play.

  7. Section I. The genetic impact factors of growth and development 1.Heredity:the offspring tends to resembles their parent. Heredity includes the following similarity between parents and their young: morphological, functional, structural, psychological , etc.

  8. 2.Heritability: the proportion of phenotypic variance attributable to genetic variance.

  9. 2.Heritability • Heritability:0.0~1.0 • 0.0 (genes do not contribute at all to phenotypic individual differences) • 1.0 (genes are the only reason for individual differences).

  11. I. Familial and ethnic heredity •

  12. I. Familial and ethnic heredity Generally, ParentsTheir children high-stature high-stature more likely shorter short-stature short-stature more likely higher As a result, human’s stature shows normal distribution, that is, mostly persons being of medium height.

  13. The heritability of height : 0.75. Means that: The stature of children in well living condition mainly depends on the heredity. The heritability is 75%, which mean the genetics factors play 75% of total role while the other factors play 25%(e.g. nutrition, physical activity, etc).

  14. I. Familial and ethnic heredity •

  15. I. Familial and ethnic heredity

  16. I. Familial and ethnic heredity •

  17. I. Familial and ethnic heredity •

  18. I. Familial and ethnic heredity • 精神疾病:遗传度=0.25 a case鞍山市康宁医院日前收治了一位来自海城的患者。

  19. I. Familial and ethnic heredity

  20. Most researches showed that: somatotype, stature (height), sitting height ratio of sitting height and body height, skeleton age (bone age) Menarche age, …… • Racial characteristics ---- There are very different in various ethnic groups. It means that physical structure mainly affected by the genetic factors.

  21. II. twin study • A ideal method of studying genetic and environmental factors.

  22. II. Twin Study • monozygotic twins, identical twins (MZ) ---- with the identical genetic basis and different environmental basis

  23. II. Twin Study • dizygotic twins, fraternal twins (DZ) ---- with the different genetic and environmental basis

  24. II. Twin Study In twin study, the heritablity which express the role of genetic factors can be calculated. Heritability ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The bigger of heritablity, the greater effect of genetic factors.

  25. II. Twin Study In abroad, many twin studies were reported, such as in the U.S., Britain, Australia, Sweden and Finland, especially in Northern Europe. The researches found that some characte-ristics are resemble in MZ: appearance、 fingerprint、 serum type 、 antibody 、 physiological function (like blood pressure, respiration, heart rate, EEG).

  26. Sexual development is also under strong genetic control. • The difference in menarche age : • 2.8 months in a group of 51 pairs of MZ twins, • 12.0 months in a group of 47 pairs of DZ twins, • 12.9 months in a group of 145 pairs of sisters, • 18.6 months in 120 pairs of unrelated women.

  27. In China, few twin studies were done on a large scale • They found that the heritability of skeletal age (bone age) is 0.80. The skeleton system variance:80% by genetic factors, 20% by environmental factors The incidence of twins: • Beijing: 0.6% • US: 1/83 (1.2%) 1/3 MZ

  28. Body height:0.86; Sitting height:0.81; Weight:0.78; Chest circumference:0.70; Others found: Intelligence:0.30-0.70, Personality : 0.50. In Harbin, we found that the heritability of
