  1. Today we will compute examples (of positive integer powers of nonnegativeintegers) as repeated multiplication. compute=to solve positive integer =whole numbers greater than zero nonnegative integers =positive numbers

  2. Positive integer- a whole number greater than 0. • Nonnegative integer- a whole number greater than 0. • Power or Exponent- a mathematical notation indicating the number of times a quantity is multiplied by itself. • A power or exponent is placed to the right of and above another number.

  3. 4 Exponential Form 3 3 1 3 3 Expanded Form 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 2 4 3 3 Multiply 3x3x3x3 = 81 Standard Form 81

  4. It is important to know how to read and write exponents because they are used when finding the area of certain places. It is on your grade level standards probably all the way until you graduate 12th grade What other reasons can you think of why it is important to read and write exponents?

  5. Definition of Exponent • An exponent tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself. Exponent 3 4 Base

  6. Repeated Multiplication • Sometimes multiplication is done over and over and over. • To write 3x3x3x3 we write 34

  7. What an Exponent Represents • An exponent tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself. 4 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 3

  8. Products of powers with the same base can be found by writing each power as a repeated multiplication. To write 5x5x5x5 we write 54

  9. Combining Exponents

  10. EXPONENTS • Writing numbers with exponents is a method to write repeated multiplication • Five squared is: • Four cubed is: • Two to the fourth power is:

  11. What does the dot mean? 2 . 2 . 2 = 16 The . (dot) means you multiply

  12. EXPONENTS • Five squared is: • Four cubed is: • Two to the fourth power is:

  13. Write as using exponents 5 . 5 . 5 . 5 = 4 5

  14. What is the Exponent? 4 5 . 5 . 5 . 5 = 5

  15. What is the Exponent ? 4 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 = 8

  16. Now you tryWrite as Exponent 5 7 . 7 . 7 . 7 . 7 = 7

  17. Now you tryWrite as Exponent 5 8 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 =

  18. So What did we learn? The dot means you multiply. What does the dot mean in 2.2.2.2? How do you write 5.5.5.5.5 in exponent form? 5 5
