A Quick Guide to Betting Glossary If you are new to sports betting or considering to enter the world of betting, you may need to get acquainted with some general terms and phrase related to sports betting. Don’t worry, you don’t need an advanced degree to understand the language of sports betting. However, a basic knowledge of these terms is good to start online betting. Let us start. Betting sports lines– another word for odds Linemaker – Also known as oddsmaker, a linemaker is a person who sets original betting lines. Often the same person performs the role in a given book. Favorite – The expected straight-up winner in a game, the favorite lays either odds or points.

In it, the participant does not play honestly due to an outside influence. Futures bet– A long-term wager, related to a team’s season-long success. Typical future bets include betting a team to win a championship at the outset of a season. Halftime bets– A bet made after the end of first half or beginning of second half where the oddsmaker starts the half of the game side and adjusts on the basis of what happened in the first half. Bad beat– It is used in the game where betting result decided late in the game to change the side covering the spread. It is losing a bet, a bettor should have won. Steam – When a line is moving unexpectedly fast. It may be a result of a group or syndicate of bettors with all getting the bets in at the same time. It can also occur as a result of a respected handicapper giving a bet his followers all jump on. It may also result due to people reacting to weather conditions or news of the injury of a player. Getting acquainted with these basic terms makes the things easier.
