  2. Observe the following painting of Maria’s family to answer these questions: Dove sono? in montagna? in autobus? Chi è la ragazza nel vestito arancione? Quante persone ci sono? Maria

  3. Riscaldamento: Risposte • Lorosono a casa. • La ragazzanelvestitoarancioneè la figlia di Maria. • Ci sono tre persone.

  4. Fernando Boteropittorecolombiano not just another chubby face: an artist’s use of shape and proportion

  5. Botero’s Beginnings In 1932, Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia, a land of great beauty and conflict.

  6. Still Life with Mandolin1956 Botero’s “puffy” style started with still life paintings. He then began painting pudgy people and animals in his version of classic paintings and original artwork.

  7. Botero Before Before becoming a world-famous painter, however, Botero studied to become a matador. For this reason, many of his earlier paintings depict bull fighting scenes.

  8. Botero’s style: Shape Botero is often asked why all his people and animals look inflated like balloons, so very round! He says that all artists find they like certain kinds of shapes more than others...and he like spheres. When you doodle, what kinds of shapes do you draw?

  9. Even his animals, even his sculptures…are puffy!

  10. Social Satire with Proportion Botero’s chubby characters often depict society in Colombia, as in this painting of an upper middle class family. His unusual use of PROPORTION highlights his feelings about the differences between the middle and working classes. What do the proportions in this painting tell you about Botero’s views ?

  11. La parodia Some of Botero’s works use his trademark style to parody famous paintings. Compare… Monalisa, 1978 Fernando Botero | MuseoBotero, Bogotá Artists are sharing what they think and believe with you through their art. You have to look for the story, the message. His work is often meant to be fun, but sometimes he has a secret message in his work. Have you ever heard the saying "he/she has a swollen head" or "they are all puffed up"?

  12. Fernando BoteroAngulo (born April 19, 1932) is a Colombian figurative artist. His works feature a figurative style, called by some "Boterismo", which gives them an unmistakable identity. His people & objects are “puffy.”

  13. Match the painting with the location. in centro a casa a casa al mare incentro inmontagna in montagna al mare Today I will create a painting of a family in the style of Botero.

  14. La rubrica • Observe the paintings by Fernando Botero and take note of his “puffy” style. • Choose a location for your painting and draw it. Example: in montagna, in città • Label your people! (miamadre, mio padre, etc.) • Add your family by drawing using Botero’spuffy style and proportion. Include at least 4 members. • Describe the picture in at least 10 sentences (2 paragraphs) on the back of your painting. • Add color to your picture and give it a caption as if it were in a museum. Example: La famiglia DaVinci.

  15. La proporzione Leonardo da Vinci didn't just spend his time painting delicate half-smiles on mysterious women, although the Mona Lisa is what most people know him for. His true fascination may have been with the most intricate and mysterious machine of them all: the human body.

  16. Drawing a body From wrist to elbow: the actual length of your face and foot! • Measure the shoulder widths as 3 heads wide for typical people. • Get the bottom of the chest in proportion by measuring down 2 head lengths from the top of the head. • Draw the arms so the fingertips fall no longer than 5 head lengths from the top of the figure. • Sketch in the legs and feet. The standard body proportion is 4 heads from the hips to the feet. • Once the standard body proportions are sketched onto the drawing, make them more definitive and fill in shadow and texture.
