  1. Essay Writing Please put these notes in your notebook in the “writing” section

  2. Which Car One of These is Not Like the Others?

  3. Why do all race cars look the same? • Because it is the most effective design! • Essay writing is the same way. • All essays you write for school will be similar because it is the most effective way to deliver information.

  4. The Form • Most essays will be 5 paragraphs long. • The first paragraph is an introductory paragraph. • The second, third, and fourth are body paragraphs. • The final paragraph is a conclusion.

  5. ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________

  6. The Hook Thesis Statement Body Paragraph 1 Body Paragraph 2 Body Paragraph 3 Reference Back To The Hook Restated Thesis Statement The Twist

  7. The Introduction • Though I will give you details in a future lesson, the introduction is meant to grab your reader’s attention. • It begins with a Riddle, a Quote, three Questions, or a very short Story (Anecdote). • The paragraph always ends in a Thesis Statement. • Thesis statements must be one sentence long.

  8. The Thesis Statement • The Thesis Statement serves as a roadmap for the rest of the essay. It tells your reader what you will write about and in what order. • It mentions the Topic of your essay and the main point of each body paragraph. • Ex: Abraham Lincoln was a President ahead of his time because of his Emancipation Proclamation, leadership during the Civil War, and planning for the Transcontinental Railroad.

  9. The Body Paragraphs • There are three body paragraph, which means that you must make three points in your essay. • If you have more or fewer points than three – tough cookies. Make it fit. • Each body paragraph begins with a Topic Sentence that tells the reader what you will cover. • The rest of the paragraph is evidence supporting your argument and explanation.

  10. The Conclusion • The Conclusion is a mirror image of the introduction. • It always begins with a reference to the Riddle, Quote, Three Questions, or Story you gave in the introduction • The second part is the Thesis Statement – but put it in different words to avoid repetition. • It is usually good to end with a Twist.

  11. For Longer Essays • When you write a longer essay, you just modify the form. • Instead of an Intro, Three Body Paragraphs, and a Conclusion, you will have an Intro, Three Subtopics, and a Conclusion. • Each Subtopic would be multiple paragraphs instead of just one paragraph. • You will use this technique for your third quarter research paper.

  12. Five Paragraph Essay Longer Essay. The Intro and Conclusion are the same, but the middle is stretched out. Each body paragraph becomes a subtopic with multiple paragraphs.

  13. It Works! • This form works for any class. • It is effective because it delivers information in a logical, organized manner. • Your reader will always know what to expect.
