  1. For internationally trained dentists who aspire to practice in Canada, the NDEB (National Dental Examining Board of Canada) is a crucial step in the licensure journey. The NDEB Equivalency Process is designed to assess whether overseas dental graduates meet the national standards expected of Canadian dentists. This process ensures a consistent level of patient care and professional competence across the country. What is the NDEB Equivalency Process? The NDEB Equivalency Process is a structured assessment pathway for dentists trained outside of Canada. It includes three key assessments, and successful completion of all three is mandatory before candidates can move on to the NDEB Certification Process, which leads to full licensure to practice dentistry in Canada. This process evaluates the knowledge, clinical judgment, and skills of international dental graduates, ensuring they align with Canadian dental education standards. Who Needs to Take the NDEB Equivalency Process? All internationally trained dentists who did not graduate from a Canadian or U.S. accredited dental program must complete the NDEB Equivalency Process. This is a vital requirement to demonstrate their eligibility to proceed with licensing in Canada. Assessments in the NDEB Equivalency Process The Equivalency Process includes the following assessments: 1. Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK) This exam tests basic biomedical and applied clinical sciences knowledge. 2. Assessment of Clinical Judgement (ACJ) This assessment evaluates the ability to make clinical decisions using case-based scenarios and images. 3. Assessment of Clinical Skills (ACS) This practical exam assesses hands-on skills in a simulated clinical environment. Pathways After the NDEB Equivalency Process Once candidates successfully complete the Equivalency Process, they become eligible for the NDEB Certification Process. This is the final phase in obtaining a license to practice dentistry in Canada.

  2. Additionally, results from specific assessments within the Equivalency Process are shared with Canadian Faculties of Dentistry. These results can be used by universities as part of the admissions process for Qualifying and Degree Completion Programs, offering another route for candidates to achieve licensure through academic programs. If candidates wish to apply directly to these programs, they can request a transcript of their assessment marks to be sent to specific institutions. This can be done through the “Other Services” section of their NDEB online profile. For more details: https://www.dental101.com.au/ndeb-canada/
