  1. Transportation Planning & Research Standing Committee Report to the Urban Transportation Council September 21, 2008 Toronto

  2. Membership • 15 members (+ 19 friends) • Good representation across business sectors and regions: • Good participation rate • Average attendance for 2008 (7 meetings) : 10 members (66%) + 1 friend.

  3. Current Projects • Best Practices for Technical Delivery of Transportation Planning Study : • Report upgraded (comments from UTC April included). English version online at end of September. French translation in October. • Workshop at TAC conference next Wednesday AM. • Presentation at an AQTR symposium (Montreal – February ‘09). • Discussion to follow on taking the workshop on tour and on linking it to TAC’s Education & Training Program. • Framework for High Quality Data Collection on Urban Goods Movements • Phase 1 : Report available online (English & French). • Phase 2 : Funding finally secured at 90k$ (75% of objective). • Project launched yesterday with adjusted strategy : no French translation of the main report and no online distribution (open for further consideration). • A briefing for free web dissemination would be produced in both languages. • Timeline = September ‘09 .

  4. Current Projects • Urban Transportation Indicators 4th Edition : • Funding: 166k$ secured (95% of objective). Project Steering Committee established in June. • Call for proposals completed and Consultant selected. Study launched yesterday. • Aiming for results highlights at September ’09 conference. • Statistics-Canada 2011 Census « Travel-to-work » questions: • Stat-Can Census Content Consultation Report published in July’08. Our topic received the most comments. • Dialogue between workgroup and Stat-Can continued over the summer. • Full scale Census test to be made next winter : final decision to follow by Stat-Can (final cut).

  5. Future Projects • Currently four on-going projects/initiatives +active participation into Climate Change and Green Roads task forces. • TP&RSC will have capacity to develop/prepare new projects over year 2009. • Seeking directions from UTC on new priorities and contributions expected from us : • To be aligned with coming UTC Strategic Planning. • Should be in line with CC and GR Task Forces needs/agendas.

  6. TAC Conference 2008 Three events under TP&RSC umbrella: • Paper session : Transit Plans & Planning: How they support sustainability • 4 papers programmed. • Panel Session : Regional Transportation Plans: Lessons in Sustainability • Toronto, Edmonton, Montréal and Ottawa. • Workshop: Best Practices for Transportation Planning Study for Small & Medium Sized Municipalities TuesdayAM TuesdayPM Wednesday AM

  7. TAC Conference 2009 Prospective events (requires coordination between the 3 Standing Committees) • Paper session : UrbanFreight Movement and Trade Gateways • Would include presentation of Phase 2 Study. • Paper Session : Best practices in Urban Transportation Planning • Would include presentation of 4th UTIP results. • Paper Session : Transit Oriented Development • Getting people out of their car… changing transportation behavior. • Opportunities for private developers involvement around intermodal facilities...
