  1. Welcome To Parent Orientation Mission Statement: To foster an environment that nurtures academic excellence and social responsibility. An environment that promote strong critical thinking and communication skills. An environment that prepares our students for a life of continued learning and success. September 13, 2012

  2. Curriculum • -Common Core: 2015 • -Math: We cover a topic a day. (pacing guide will be posted online) • A test every 1-2 weeks. • -Writing: Variety of genres • Final Drafts will be typed, published on our writing, and sent home to enjoy. • -Spelling: New list every Monday • We will reinforcing spelling throughout the week with activities. • Optional activities packet was sent home 9/25/12 in our Tuesday envelope; also posted on our class page. • Test on Fridays • -Cursive we be taught during 3rd trimester.

  3. Homework • Objective: To reinforce skills taught in the classroom. • -Math: nightly • -Reading/ Writing Journal: Students will receive a prompt on Monday. They are to read 20-30 minutes nightly and return their completed prompt on Friday. • -Spelling: Optional Study Techniques • -Social Studies/Science/ Health: as needed.

  4. Room 8 Activities • -Multiplication Adventure • -Technology throughout all content areas • -Battle of the Books • -Tuesday and Thursday Math Study Club 3:30-4:10 in Room 8 • -Box tops

  5. Additional Programs • -Art :Every other Thursday 2:10—3:10 • -Library: Every Thursday 9:00-9:30 • Reference Resource Lab • - African Music and Dance Program; tentatively scheduled for January

  6. WEDNESDAY ASSEMBLIES • -Last Wednesday of every month • -Twice a month we will honor Room 8 in class.

  7. Snack Schedule: Monthly Calendar Monday, Thursday , Friday: Around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday: Afternoon snacks around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday: During recess/lunch 10:45 a.m. Healthy Snacks for 24 students. (Please do not send Nature Valley Granola Bars)

  8. Field Trips -Autumn Harvest: Natural History Museum Tentatively scheduled for December. -Symphony Tentatively scheduled for November Looking into a play and possible other cultural experiences.

  9. Volunteers • Centers: Monday and Thursday 9:35-11:45 a.m. • Volunteer Website: Sign-Up Genius • Art: Every other Thursday 2:10-3:10p.m. • Field Trips, Classroom projects, etc. • * Volunteer paper work*
