Tagus River and its proximity to the ocean represent, since the very beginning, an imperative role in the city’s military, social, cultural, and economical development It’s the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. Rises in Spain (Serra de Albarracín), crosses all Portugal from one side to the other, flowing into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon.

  10. EGEAC is a Lisbon Municipality’s public company. Our main social object is to manage and preserve cultural heritage, as well as Theatres and Cinemas that belong to Lisbon City Hall; production of cultural actions and events, including festivals, shows, Festas de Lisboa (Lisbon Festivities with over 800.000 attendances), street events and other acts of the same nature. It’s also our duty to bring culture and events in urban spaces to all kind of audiences, promoting social inclusion within the city. The main cultural equipments/activities managed by EGEAC are:

  11. Castleof São Jorge: 1 million visitors/year

  12. Monument to the Discoveries: 200.000 visitors/year;

  13. Puppet Museum: 20.000 visitors year

  14. Fado Museum: 20.000 visitors/year

  15. Municipal Theatre - Maria Matos

  16. Municipal Theatre - S. Luiz

  17. Municipal Theatre- Taborda

  18. Cinema - São Jorge

  19. Lisbon Festivities

  20. If we didn’t have the river, our activities would be very different for sure The river is very important to us, in the meaning that symbolically is absolutely connected with the city, and also because some of our cultural facilities are located near the riverbank

  21. The Castle was originally built geographically close to the river on purpose

  22. The Monument to the Discoveries pays honour to all those that went abroad by water, discovering new worlds

  23. Nor only we use the riverbank to make street activities, we also include water themes in them

  24. Even Fado, being the traditional Lisbon song, would probably be a different type of music, if it wasn't the river: - subjects of faith; people who work in the docklands; sailors who never came back

  25. With the new works in the city, a 2nd airport and a 3rd bridge over Tagus River on the way, and with the intervention on Pombaline Downtown, the case study we’ll present you next, Lisbon will continue to have great cultural and touristic business branches for us to continue our activities, making it a continuously better city for all that live there, or for the ones that come to visit us during all year.
