  1. B. B.Ward, Princeton With A. Jayakumar, S. W. A. Naqvi and C. A. Francis CHE98-10248 Depth (m) I II III IV V VI In an international collaboration with Indian scientists, we are investigating the relationship between the composition of the denitrifying bacterial assemblage and the rates of denitrification in the Arabian Sea. These are the first nitrite reductase (nirS) sequences reported from the marine water column and they show close correlation between gene diversity and intensity of denitrification, as indicated by high nitrite concentrations in the bottom waters. Distance phylogenetic tree showing relationships between nirS sequences obtained from the coastal Arabian Sea and sequences from cultured denitrifiers. Several novel groups are identified.
