Johnson Jr. • Morgan State U. – Dr. Donald Helm • North Carolina A&T U. – Dr. Shoou-Yuh Chang • Prairie View A&M U. – Dr. Ing Chang • Southern U. – Dr. Patrick Carriere • Tennessee State U. – Dr. Lonnie Sharpe Jr. • Turabo U. – Dr. Roberto Lorán • Tuskegee U. – Dr. Nosa Egiebor

  5. What we have done * • $37.1 M in grants in addition to DOE funds • 80 research projects underway for industry and government entities (75 with significant findings) • over 250 presentations in national and international conferences • 9 books, 14 book chapters and numerous publications in scientific journals • partnered in over 77 research-related and 25 education-related projects * Initial 8-year-period

  6. Areas of activity • Academic offerings • Research • Outreach activities • International projects • Collaboration

  7. Research projects • evaluation of stabilization & solidification waste-forms of mixed wastes, microbial stability of ceramic-coated metal container materials for use in the Yucca Mountain Radioactive Waste Repository • design of a novel gas chromatographic system for the analysis of radioactive uranium gases • modeling of movement of tritium in the vadose zone • computer simulation of combustion process for pollution studies

  8. Research projects • development of computer code to model three-dimensional transient subsidence • design and assembly of a portable gas chromatographic system for the analysis of corrosive uranium fluoride gases • demonstration of bioremediation option for PCBs, PCB and explosive contaminated sites; molecular modeling of hydrophobic organic contaminants uptake and sequestration by soil organic mater

  9. Research projects • development of a bio-sensor technique to detect agricultural contaminants in the environment • removal of arsenic and organic contaminants from waste water by natural wasters • design of an innovative sandbox for conducting research of contaminant migration through the vadose zone • optimization of performance in molten carbonate fuel cells

  10. Outreach activities • Projects with disadvantaged communities and institutions: • community technology centers • expose students environmental issues • computer literacy to farmers • enhance math & science education • collect and analyze soil and water samples by high school students • Each Massie Chair has initiated outreach programs in their neighboring communities.
