  3. 15.1 Gastro - Stomach • Gastronomy – the art of cooking good food (stomach) • Hypogastric– the lower region of the stomach/abdomen

  4. Arthro - Joint • Arthritis – a disease of swollen joints • Arthropod – animal with a segmented body and jointed “feet”

  5. Dors - Back • Dorsal – adj. describing the area near the back of an animal (dorsal fin) • Dorsum – the back of an animal

  6. Macro - Large • Macrobiotic – a diet of whole grains (whole—think large) • Macroscopic – large enough to be seen by the human eye

  7. Dextro – Right or Clockwise • Dextrose – Dexter – right; on the right-hand side • Dexterity – mental and physical quickness / doing things right

  8. Kin - Motion • Kinetic – motion of the body • Telekinesis - the motion of objects with the mind

  9. Phos - Light • Phosphorus – glow in the dark light • Phosphene – light seen when the eye is closed

  10. Gon - Angle • Pentagon – five angles • Diagonal – “across” at an angle

  11. Vore - Eating • Carnivore – animals eating meat • Devour – eating quickly

  12. Holo - Whole • Hologram – 3D image of a whole object • Holocaust – attempted elimination of a whole race

  14. Tropo - Turn • Heliotrope – a plant with flowers that turn toward the sun • Tropism – a natural inclination to turn toward something that interests you (tropism toward reading)

  15. Ventri - Belly • Ventriloquist - speaking (from the belly) in a way that looks like it’s coming from something else • Ventral – adj. describing the area around an animal’s belly

  16. Brachy - Short • Brachylogy – a short expression • Brachypterous – having small wings

  17. 15.2 Brachio - Arm • Brachiopod – marine animals with shells and tentacle arms • Brachium – the upper segment of the arm

  18. Branchio - Gills • Branchiopod – small crustaceans with gills • Branchia – gill

  19. Phylo - Kind • Phylum – a certain kind of plant/animal (category under plant and animal kingdom) • Phylogenesis – the evolution of organisms of the same kind

  20. Blasto - Embryo • Blastocyst – the structures that form embryos in mammals • Blastogensis – the cell that begins the embryo stage of blood formation

  21. Dactylo - Finger • Dactylology – spelling with the fingers • Dactyl – a finger, a “digit”

  22. Lite – Mineral or Fossil • Vanthracite– a hard type of mineral coal • Halite – the mineral rock salt

  23. Haplo – Single or Simple • Haplology – when two identical syllables are simplified to one (Anglaland became England) • Haplosis – the halving of chromosomes during meiosis to two simple haploid cells

  24. Opia - Sight • Synopsis – a brief look (sight) into something (see together) • Diplopia – a disorder when two images of one single object are seen

  25. Lent – Full Of • Insolent – full of disrespect • Turbulent – full of disorder

  26. Ef - Out • Effusive – letting out lots of emotion • Effluent – flowing out of water (like an effluent river)

  27. Ium – An element • Sodium – a silver element found in salt • Radium – a radioactive element used in cancer treatment

  28. Dicho – In 2 Parts • Dichotomy – a division into two parts/groups • Dichogamous – describing two things divided into parts
