ANST Mission The Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology professional division was established to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

  4. ANST Governance: Membership • ANST represents 4.5% of ANS membership • About ~34 % of members are students Note: Seeing additional increase in 2011 numbers as a result of Class I Topical Meeting. April 2011: 563 members, increase of 8% over 2010.

ANST Governance: Planning • 5-Year Strategic Plan / 1-year Tactical Plan • Last updated in 2008 (planned to be updated in 2011) • Main long-term goals include: • Technical: Topical Meeting, ICAPP space track, & ANS annual meetings • Communications: website & newsletter (1-2 per year) • Establish peer recognition awards • Engage ANST membership and expand membership to more aerospace-based individuals • Foster student development – student liaison, student conferences, travel support • ANS position statements (PS 40 updated 2008) • Improve ANST governance – expansion of EC participants • Succession Planning • Last updated in 2008/2009 • Officers: two year terms, staggered • Treasurer – odd years • Secretary – even years • Non officers: identified in the succession plan; committee Chair appointments are made by the Chair and are approved by majority • Document operations to assist in officer transitions (officers perform pre-job and post-job briefs)

ANST Governance: Communications • Newsletter: • Most recent issue: December 2010 • Target: 1-2 per year (June - Dec) • Typically includes: Chair message, Coming events, Feature Article, Committee reports and News • Website: • Regularly updated with a dedicated webmaster • Provide information on ANST officers and committees, conferences, minutes, newsletters and TG governance • Recent focus on the conference website – Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space 2011

ANST Contributions to ANS • ANS Position Statements: # 40 Space Nuclear Technology: revised Nov. 2008 • Participation with Other Professional Societies: • Space Technology Applications International Forum (STAIF) – Final Meeting held in 2/2008 (class IV sponsorship) • Space Nuclear Systems Forum (SNSF) – NASA, DOE, AIAA and ANS ANST 2/2009, 2/2010 • American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) – class IV co-sponsor of ANS/NETS 2009 and NETS 2011 • Working with Lunar & Planetary Institute / Lunar & Planetary Science Conference for joint meeting in 2012 • Society Leadership: • EC members participate and serve on various committees and in the EC for several divisions: NPC, PDC, YMG, Student Sections, etc. • EC members have historically served on the Board of Directors (Shannon Bragg-Sitton and Kathy McCarthy) • Non-Meeting Publications: • Contributions to ANS Nuclear Café Blog, January 2011 and March 2011 (latter not published due to Fukushima response)

ANST Services to Membership • Professional Development • Regular participation in ANS National Teacher Workshops • Outreach to Jr High and HS students on space nuclear topics • Scholarships • ANST has developed a strategy for developing an ANST Scholarship • Recent income from NETS2011 topical meeting may allow non-endowed scholarship to be awarded • Peer Recognition/Awards: • ANSTD Membership, Honors & Awards Committee working to establish a peer recognition award – options have been discussed and will be implemented in 2011 • Nominations of ANSTD members for national awards planned in 2011 • Planning to establish best paper awards at ANST sponsored topical meetings • Currently sponsor awards for best undergraduate and graduate papers at the annual student conferences • Student Support • Travel support to the student conference and the ANS annual meetings • Best paper awards at ANST sponsored topicals and student conferences • Paper reviewers and judges provided for space related papers submitted to ANS student conferences

ANST Meetings • First ANSTD-sponsored Class I topical held in February 2011 – Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space 2011 (NETS-2011) • In odd numbered years, ANST has organized an embedded topical, at the ANS Annual Meeting • Space Nuclear Conference ’05, ‘07 • Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space ’09 • In even numbered years, ANST has a co-sponsored the "Space Power and Propulsion" technical track in Class III ICAPP meetings. • ANST provides track chairs, solicits presenters, reviews papers and chairs sessions. (OPD remains the primary sponsoring division) • ANST works to develop aerospace sessions during the ANS winter meetings

NETS-2011 Summary • February 7-10, 2011, Albuquerque, NM • 190 Attendees, 89 papers presented • 3 plenary/special sessions, 2 panel sessions, 25 technical sessions, 2 evening events • Technical tours at Sandia National Laboratories • Local Section Sponsor: Trinity Section • Key speakers: • Honorary General Chairs: • John Casani, Special Assistant to the Director, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory • Harry Finger, retired, formerly held several key positions within AEC, NASA, etc. • Plenary: • Dr. Michael Griffin, former NASA Administrator, and King-McDonald Eminent Scholar for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville • Dinner Speaker: • Dr. Harrison Schmidt, Apollo 17 astronaut and former U.S. Senator (NM) • Key session summaries and keynote talks posted at: http://anstd.ans.org/NETS2011/NotesPresentNETS2011.html

ANST Future Meetings • ANSTD plans to repeat the NETS meeting as a Class I topical on a biennial basis in odd years, with AIAA as a non-financial co-sponsor • NETS-2013 currently slated for Albuquerque, NM • Most likely to occur in February or March time frame • ANSTD plans to support a space nuclear meeting in even years as a Class II topical meeting • NETS-2012 held in conjunction with the Lunar & Planetary Science Conference in March 2012 – sponsored by NASA and the Lunar & Planetary Institute • Proposals currently being prepared to hold NETS-2014 in the UK, supported by the British Interplanetary Society, the UK Space Agency, and/or the University of Leicester
