The GfK Roper Green Gauge Report, 2007 Surveyed 2,000 American adults ages 18 and up 87% seriously concerned about the environment 49% would do more for the environment “if they only knew how” Top five environmental issues: Water pollution & rainforest destruction Diminishing fresh water supply Fuel & energy shortages Man-made outdoor air pollution

  3. Four areas where you can make a difference: Home Work Food Transport What is RIT doing? Share your ideas & current projects!

  4. Home Tip: Think about the things you use a lot of. Try to make those things last longer or recycle quicker. Biodegradable Q-tips & garbage bags Energy-efficient light bulbs Energy Audit Most utilities companies offer this for free. Inspectors will go room by room through your home, inspect all appliances, lighting, doors, heating units, etc. According to the EPA, by just fixing the drafts in your home you can save up to 20 percent a year on your utility bills. Solar Panels Sierra Club tips for solar projects under $1000: http://www.sierraclub.org/wecandoit/home/solar.asp

  5. Work Choose Electronic Direct deposit, electronic statements, online taxes, print to PDF, email meeting agendas & minutes, online registration forms Good Energy Use Turn off unneeded peripherals, hibernate your computer, duplex printing, recycle paperwork, staple-free staplers, use refillable pens and pencils Estimate your Power Usage CO2 emissions from 15 computers are equivalent in energy terms to the gas consumption used by one car http://www.localcooling.com/

  6. Food Buy Local Better for you, better for the environment! Recycle & Reuse Purchase items with less packaging, reuse disposable containers, eco-friendly tote bags DIY Plant a garden, compost green waste Water Bottles 90% of water bottles worldwide are not recycled Invest in a tap filter and refillable bottle

  7. Transport Car Buy a hybrid, carpool & rideshare, inflate your tires, empty your trunk, do maintenance Bicycle Enjoy the outdoors, exercise, lower your environmental impact, learn a new sport Take the Stairs Healthy people = lower impact (less medicine consumption & shipment, less surgery, fewer hospital stays) Opt for natural exercise rather than a gym (energy guzzling air conditioning & machines)
