  4. Repetition • Repeated words or phrases at the beginnings of clauses, lines or sentences • “Now is the time … “ “Now is the time …” • “I have a dream …” “I have a dream …”

  5. Aphorism • A concise statement of truth • Michigan State’s defense dominated Stanford in the Rose Bowl • Mr. Sheehan is awesome

  6. Parallelism • The use of repeated grammatical structures • “ …we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship…”

  7. Allusion • A direct or indirect reference to something from history, the bible, etc. • “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.”

  8. Rhetorical Question • A question for which the answer is obvious • Does Omar talk too much? • Is Marquise a good basketball player?

  9. Metaphor/Simile • Comparisons of two unlike things. • “Now is the time to life our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.”

  10. Writing Prompt • Edwards uses rhetorical devices to connect with his audience. Identify a rhetorical appeal Edwards uses and explain the effect. Use a detail from the passage to support your claim.
