This captivating demonstration, led by Aaron Williams and Kristina Mickelson, illustrates the principles of combustion using a dollar bill, an alcohol-water solution, and simple chemistry. The reaction C2H5OH + 4O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O + energy showcases how alcohol burns in the presence of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of heat and light. Participants will learn about the nature of combustion, the reactants involved, and the importance of safety while conducting this visually striking experiment. Perfect for educational settings or science enthusiasts.

Burning Money Demo. By: Aaron Williams & Kristina Mickelson
Balanced Chemical Reaction C2H5OH+4O2 2CO2+3H20+energy
Reactants C2H5OH4O2 • Carbon • Hydrogen • Oxygen
Products 2CO23H2Oenergy • Carbon dioxide • Water • Energy
Combustion • Act or process of burning • Rapid oxidation accompanied by hear and usually, light • Chemical combustion attended by production of heat and light • Slow oxidation not accompanied by high temperature and light
Materials • Alcohol-water solution(50% alcohol 50%water) • Dollar bill • Tongs • Matches or lighter
Procedure • . Prepare the alcohol and water solution. You can mix 50 ml of water with 50 ml of 95-100% alcohol. • 2. Add a pinch of salt or other colorant to the alcohol/water solution, to help produce a visible flame. • 3. Soak a dollar bill in the alcohol/water solution so that it is thoroughly wet. • 4. Use tongs to pick up the bell. Allow any excess liquid to drain. Move the damp bill away from the alcohol/water solution. • 5. Light the bill on fire and allow it to burn until the flame goes out.
