  1. Endangeredspecies Nature, we have a problem

  2. Index • What´stheproblem? • WHICH ANIMALS ARE IN DANGER? • TOP 10 • Causes of theextinction • Howtofixit?

  3. What´stheproblem? An endangered species is a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has calculated the percentage of endangered species. Many countries have laws that offer protection to endangered animals: for example, prohibiting hunting or creating reserves.Only a few of the many endangered species get legal protection like pandas.

  4. WHICH ANIMALS ARE IN DANGER? Europe: Atlanticridley, olive ridley, Blue whale, Greenlandwhale, humpbackwhale, seiwhale, Mediterraneanmonkseal and lynx. Africa: Atlanticsalmon, leatherbackturtle, wild ass, chimpanzee, AfricanElephant, Mountain gorilla, cheetah, hippopygmy, blacklemur, leopard, Mediterraneanmonkseal, African wild dog, whiterhino, bluewhale and fin whale. Asia : Crested ibis, bluewhale, gray whale, Greenlandwhale, Seiwhale, Asianelephant, cheetah, hippopotamus,Asiaticlion, leopard, snowleopard, otters, orangutans, giant panda, India rhino, tapir and tiger. Oceania: Philippine eagle, green turtle and komodo dragon blue whale. America: Baldeagle, California condor, peregrine falcon, whitepelican, toucan, American alligator, sea turtle, olive ridleyturtleorAtlanticridley, giant armadillo, gray squirrel, bluewhale, gray whale, Greenlandwhale, seiwhale, black-footedferret, jaguar, gray wolf, Florida manatee, Vancouver marmot, otter, ocelot, Grizzlybear, giantanteater, Black bear, cougar East, tapir and gray wolf.

  5. TOP 10 • 10) GIANT PANDA BEAR There are 1600 pandas living in thejungles and 188 in captivity. Todaythepopulations of pandas are foundonly in China . • 9) JAVA RHINOCEROS Itiscriticallyendangered, only known wild population, and there are none in captivity. • 8)MonarchButterfly The Monarch butterfly can be found in a number of habitats like fields, urban and suburban parks, gardens and roads. During winter they vive in coniferous forests. • 7) Mountain Gorilla The mountain gorilla live in Virunga volcanic mountains. Its population isn´t abundant, there are 700 species in the wild. • 6) Blue Tail Tuna Itlives in theAtlanticOcean and theMediterranean Sea. Thebluetail tuna isextinct in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.

  6. TOP 10 • 5) Leather Back TurtleMainly inhabit the Atlantic coast. Itisestimatedthatthere are only 3.200 adultfemaleturtles. • 4) MagellanicPenguinThefish, theirfood, has changedtheirtransitroutesbywarming of oceancurrents. Because of thatthenumber of individuals has declined. • 3) Pacific Sea LionTheir habitat is entirely of ice blocks floating on the sea. Whenthe blocks melt, many are leftwithout a place tobreed. • 2) Polar BearThis animal one of the main victims of global warming and also has faced the hunt to get your skin. • 1) TigerCurrentlythere are about 3,200 tigers in theworld. Hunters lookingfortheirskins, bones, orjustkeepdevouringhiscattle, coupledwithdeforestation in forestregions, havemanagedto place thetiger as endangeredspecies more alarming.

  7. Causes of theextinction Direct causes • OveruseThe global exploitation of animals has caused many species become extinct or be in danger. • HuntingHunting has been a major factor in the extinction of certain species. Many are hunted for their fur; others for food... • CollectionA lot of animals and plants are collectedforscientific and medicalresearch, and fordisplay in zoos. • Persecution of Natural PredatorsMany human beings believe that some wild animals are a threat to their farms and kill them.

  8. Causes of theextinction Indirect causes • AgricultureComplete natural ecosystems are converted to fields where only one or a few species cultivated. • Environmental PollutionMany toxic substances are released into the waste disposal process are very similar to pesticides, with similar impacts on ecosystems. • DevelopmentForests are being cut everywhere destroying ecosystems. • Introduction of SpeciesThe transfer of plants and animals from one ecosystem to another has had catastrophic effects. • WarDestroys not only human, too many species.

  9. Howtofix? • Obtain their cooperation to protect habitats and create new nature reserves. • Avoid indiscriminate deforestation of forests, to protect the habitat. • Prevent environmental pollution (air, soil, water) • Avoid traffic and illegal marketing of animals and plants which are endangered. • Encourage the use of artificial insemination techniques in endangered animals to increase the number of individuals. • Avoid hunting in closed season. • Prevent exploitation and modification of natural habitats of the species. • Help organizations who are responsible of rescuing the last specimens of endangered animals and keep them in captivity in a habitat similar to their natural habitat.
