I will show how structure, language and characterisation help the reader to better understand the highs and lows of drug addiction • At start of novel • Multiple unreliable narrators - helps us truly understand personal experiences • Structure of novel allows us to follow each character through their own relationship with heroin • First impressions of Tar/Gemma/Lily • hedonism • dramatic irony • allure • catalyst • Pivotal scene • Tar’s experience of trying drugs • See effects of heroin on both Tar and Gemma • Drugs seem glamorous and appealing, even sexy • Lily’s role in the scene • sordid • Middle of the novel • How have all the characters been affected by drugs? • Negative aspects of drugs being clearly demonstrated • Lily’s presentation in middle of novel • nihilistic • tragic • Self-destructive • End of the novel • Show how their lives and characteristics have changed • Gemma is more positive, upbeat, a survivor and has recovered • Tar is still an addict and controlled by drugs • Lily’s presentation at end- has been destroyed by addiction • Show how the character of Lily personifies the good and bad of heroin
