Health indicators • Over 1.5 million people are HIV positive of which 0.9 million have full blown AIDS. • The majority of those who are affected with HIV/AIDS disease in Uganda unfortunately are within the bracket of 15 to 40 years, which is where the majority of the labor force come from. • Women form the majority of people affected by HIV. • The prevalence of HIV has gone down from 30% in 1990 to 9% in 1999 and 6.5% in 2003 due to ABC approach by Government.

Medical Services • The Doctor- Patient ratio 1:18,700 • Total Health work force 18,102 • Medical specialists 269 • 57 State hospitals, 44 NGO hospitals and 5 private hospitals (most of which are poor equipped or not equipped at all). • Only 49% of households in Uganda have access to health care facilities
