  6. How would you define ethical leadership? Put Virtue ethics into practice using the Cardinal virtues of Justice, Prudence, Fortitude & Temperance ‘Leadership that is involved in leading in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of others. ’ ‘Ethical leadership is knowing your core values and having the courage to live them in all parts of your life in service of the common good.’ Utilitarian Ethics - ‘The good of the many outweigh the good of the few.’ Jeremy Bentham (and Mr Spock) The Rooflight Company

  8. Added ValuesThe Importance of Ethical Leadership 63% of managers have been asked to do something against their personal ethical code 10% of managers have resigned as a result 43% had been directly requested to do something they believe is contrary to the values of their organisations, and 9% had been asked to break the law. 53% of respondents think their own standards are higher than those of their organisations Source: Joint Report from Business in the Community and the Institute of Leadership and Management:, June 2013 The Rooflight Company

  9. Added ValuesThe Importance of Ethical Leadership “[I’ve seen] a number of situations where profit is put before living by our values – not in a way that would be in any sense contrary to the law, health and/or safety, but shoddy all the same.” • “In my organisation, stated values and actual values practised are worlds apart, especially since the last reform (2008). We are probably the most corrupt organisation in the country.” “Senior leaders have to realise the catastrophic consequences of not following an ethical line. It wasn’t that the guys at the top of Enron were deliberately trying to screw the system, but they weren’t in the minds of their managers who had to do their jobs.” Source: Joint Report from Business in the Community and the Institute of Leadership and Management:, June 2013 The Rooflight Company

  14. Ethical Leadership • Case Study No. 1 – Low-cost Manufacture • Situation: You’re a premium priced supplier - 2 times more expensive than your main competitor. • Profits are significantly down – you have to find ways to reduce costs – you can’t increase prices. • A low cost supplier of steel fabrications in India has been proposed. • Issues - Unethical practices Poor and exploitative working conditions Potential of putting your own and other British workers out of work • What do you do? The Rooflight Company

  15. Ethical Leadership • Case Study No. 2 – Making Redundancies • Situation -In a critical redundancy situation, one candidate in is on the list due to very poor performance, attendance and attitude. • Major contributing factor is his son has muscular dystrophy, and his wife has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. • Issues – How can you demonstrate compassion when you need to cut jobs? • What do you do? The Rooflight Company

  16. Ethical Leadership • Case Study No. 3 - Potentially eliminating a Competitor • Situation -A competitor has closely copied the designs of your products and all marketing material for a number of years. They represent a small portion of the market, but they have definitely taken > £1m business away from you. • You have just found out that their products are not compliant with new legislation. If they fail to comply with legislation, they could be forced to withdraw their products from sale, thus closing that part of their operation down. It has cost you a considerable amount of money and on going cost to ensure compliance. • Issues - Are you prepared to see people made redundant through your own actions? • What do you do? The Rooflight Company

  18. God of Salvation Wake us up Lord! Move us from our lives Of greed and selfishness, From our globalised world Of inequality and exploitation To your Kingdom Of righteousness and mercy, To a transformed world Where peace is built on understanding, not weapons, The poor are empowered to live their lives to the full, Businesses are built on need, not greed, And your creation is nurtured, not abused. Wake us up Lord as people of the light. Amen The Rooflight Company @rooflightco
