SharePoint - 983444 • Psconfig may take a long time to complete so don’t reboot right away once the updates are installed.  Psconfig runs silently when Sharepoint updates are installed from MU/WSUS. If you manually install the 983444 security update (or any Sharepoint update), you must manually run psconfig (Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration wizard)·         If you or someone you know has hit this issue, call CSS and give them the upgrade.log and pscdiagnostics_* log(s) from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\logs.·         If you have encountered a failure, restart the Windows Internal Database service and then re-run psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait –force

IIS - 982666 • I wanted to make sure everyone had the most up to date information regarding MS10-040: Vulnerability in Internet Information Services could allow remote code execution and the issue where IIS 6 applications may stop responding after you install Microsoft update KB 982666 The details on MS10-040 itself can be found via http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=982666 and the additional information regarding the IIS6 application issue is available via http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webtopics/archive/2010/06/14/iis-6-applications-may-stop-responding-after-you-install-microsoft-update-kb-982666.aspx On that blog post they outline the symptoms and some additional details (and they note there that not all IIS installs running on Windows 2003 will be impacted by this patch).

IIS - 982666 • The current course of action is still being suggested that the patch be fully tested in customer environments and then deployed as the rule and that IIS should continue running normally. Windows Server 2008 is not affected by this issue. When there is an exception and application stops occur on Windows Server 2003 systems, there is a solution provided (near the end of the blog post). There is an additional blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/friis/archive/2009/12/10/iis-6-may-stop-responding-after-you-install-microsoft-update-kb-973917.aspx with additional details; most of the summary information is the same. Microsoft is still recommending that customers review the posts and confirm you have fully and successfully tested, without issue, MS10-040 - Vulnerability in Internet Information Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982666) and deploy the update. In the event you run into the application stop issue we are asking customers to call in to support and get a case open.

Office Updates • Error 646 while installing updates.: • http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/18449f60-c149-4eaf-b8e6-a2880cd7232b • Issue Summary: • We are aware of a potential issue you  may encounter with recent Office Security updates.   When installing these updates, the Windows Update control panel returns the error 646 or 0x80070646.

Office Updates • Technical Details: • The error 0x80070646 or 646 is an MSI installer error that will only occur when the updates are installed via the Windows Update control Panel.  Previous workaround to resolve the immediate problem requires the installation of the update from a standalone package from the Microsoft Download Center.  We do not recommend this workaround. • If Windows Installer logging is enabled, the following line should be noted as a symptom: • Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\ • Cause: • The problem is potentially a result of an inconsistent/incorrect environmental variable (%AppData%) as shown below:

Office Updates • Solution: • 1.       Open the Registry editor.  To do so, Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list.In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue. • 2.       Navigate to the following registry keysHKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders • 3.       The correct and default value forAppData should be %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming. To change the value, double click on Appdata, then change the string in the value data field. • 4.      Close the Registry editor, and try again Windows Update again. (A reboot shouldnot be required.) • 5.       If the problem persists, repeat the steps 2 through 4 with the following registry keys: • ·        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\ • ·        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\
