Internet history of transitions • 1983: Flash cut • Turned off the old ARPANET, turned on the new one • At all worked swimmingly (cough) • Process that led up to that: • Five year discussion of IPv4+TCP design • Implementation of protocols and applications • Community decision to switch over together

  4. IPv4/IPv6 transition • Specification of IPv6 • Now largely Draft Standard • Transition analyses: • Several RFCs considering routing aspects etc • Several RFCs and Internet Drafts reviewing enterprise, WLAN, broadband, and other deployment scenarios

Fundamental transition recommendation • RFC 2893 • http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2893.txt • Transition Mechanisms for IPv6 Hosts and Routers • Fundamental recommendations: • Between networks, implement IPv4 and IPv6 native routing and forwarding • Ensure connectivity of IPv4 network while creating connectivity of IPv6 network • Within networks, do what works

IPv6-only and IPv6-dominant • Starting to see commercial ISPs and other networks deploying IPv6-only services • Reasons • Concerns about disturbing commercial IPv4 services • Perceived lack of backward compatibility requirement • Desire to be “cutting edge” and force the issue • In some cases, real issues in address assignment

  9. Is the value of end to end connectivity being discarded in local optimizations? Is there actually an end to end path through the network for both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic? The worry

  10. Current road map • Continue analsys • Recommended transition approach unchanged: • Ensure end to end IPv4 connectivity • Add end to end IPv6 connectivity • Let transition plans be published by RFC Editor as “Informational”
