Genetic Engineering

This overview explores genetic engineering's benefits and drawbacks in various fields, including agriculture and athletics. It highlights how genetic modification can lead to enhanced traits in plants and animals, offering advantages such as improved taste, disease resistance, and nutritional benefits. However, ethical concerns arise from potential environmental damage, disease induction in organisms, and health risks such as increased allergic reactions. In athletics, while enhancements can improve physique and performance, they also carry risks of severe health issues. A balanced comprehension of these factors is essential for informed discussions on genetic engineering.

  1. Genetic Engineering By: Victoria Keen

  2. in general: • Pros: • Understanding the function of organisms • Design • Modification of animals and plants • Cross breeding animals • EX. A mule • Precise in introducing desirable traits • Cons: • Use of bacteria, viruses, or plasmids • Organisms are made sick to get the gene that is desired • Unnatural • Disrupts integrity of the recipient genome • Cannot control copies of the genes inserted

  3. in food: • Pros: • Taste and quality • Enhanced flavors • Resistant to disease • Plants/animals • Vaccine into genetics instead of the immune system • Nutritional benefits • Vitamins/minerals added to provide better nutritional benefits • Cons: • Environment damage • Plants and livestock being grown in places that aren’t environmentally safe for them • No economic value • Takes the same amount of time and effort • Increase in allergic reactions • Feeding livestock with foods people have allergies to

  4. In athletics: • Pros: • Short term goals • Bigger and better muscles/ body • Looking good • Feeling good about your body • Cons: • Severe acne • Increased risk of tendinitis • Liver abnormalities • Tumor • High blood pressure • heart/ circulatory problems • Prostate enlargement
