Survey Introduction Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) Selian Agricultural Research Institute • Agricultural monitoring system that collects household and field-level data • Use PDA devices and Tablets • Includes: • Household socio-economic data • Agricultural information flows • Inputs and land management practices the people the survey

  5. Survey Purpose To make ict4ag a universal tool to collect agriculture information across the African continent. To provide real-time feedback and recommendations to farmers and agricultural extension workers. Goals:

PDA Survey Tool: The Basics ON/OFF SWITCH Press and hold the “ON/OFF SWITCH” button at the top of the phone SPEAKER • Press and hold the same “ON/OFF SWITCH” button Turning off the PDA Turning on the PDA Sleep Mode BACK MENU HOME SEARCH Press the “ON/OFF SWITCH” for one second to put the PDA in hibernate/sleep mode

  13. PDA Survey Tool: The Basics PDA: Press the “ON/OFF SWITCH” on the top of the PDA. Swipe your finger on the “TOUCH SCREEN” toward the bottom of the screen. Unlocking the device Tablet: Press the “ON/OFF SWITCH” on the top of the tablet. Swipe your finger on the “TOUCH SCREEN” from left to right across the screen. Tablet

On the “TOUCH SCREEN” there are three main applications or programs: Home Screen Applications • ODK Collect • Distance and Area Measurement • Locus Free 1 2 3 **Please only use these three applications.**

  16. PDA Survey Tool: Other Important Info Settings GPS Brightness Global Positioning System that uses satellite information to provide location information • Adjusts the brightness of the screen – this will change how well you can see the screen

  17. PDA Survey Tool: Other Important Info • Click on the “BRIGHTNESS” icon to increase and decrease the brightness. A lower brightness will save more battery. • Click on the “GPS” icon to turn the GPS system on and off. Make sure GPS is OFF before conducting the survey.

Transportation All enumerators will meet at 8:45 every morning at the Kisongo village office An AfSIS vehicle and driver will take enumerators to their interview locations AfSIS provided: Personal Transportation: If you have your own transportation, please tell the ict4ag team Reimbursement for fuel

  26. General Guidelines 1 You will be late (in the morning or afternoon). We will make sure that the vehicle waits for you or returns to pick you up. You will not be able to work one day. Your PDA/Tablet battery is almost gone. If the battery is very low (under 15%), use the paper survey for the next survey. 2 Please contact Wilbert if: 3

  28. Stipend and Feedback Stipend Enumerators will be paid 30,000 Tsh per day worked Enumerators must arrive on time. Stipend Feedback Enumerator feedback is very important! Group meetings the first three Wednesdays We want to know: how to improve survey questions, translation, engaging interviewees, survey timing, and technology issues.

What is open data kit (ODK)? What can we use it for? Build a data collection form or survey Collect the data on a mobile device and send it to a server Aggregate the collected data on a server and extract it in useful formats 1 2 3

Open Data Kit: The Basics • Go to the “HOME SCREEN” • Find the “ODK COLLECT” program (It has an icon that looks like this) and click on it • You should see the screen on the right • There are four options: • Start New Form • Continue Saved Form • Send Finished Data • Manage Forms and Data • Click on “START NEW FORM” 1 2 3 4 5

  38. Open Data Kit: Text Input For our practice survey, answer all the questions about yourself. Read the first question. Type in your name using the keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Practice touching the keys to write your name. When you done, swipe across the screen (right to left) to go to the second question. 1. What is your name? 1 2 3 4

  40. Open Data Kit: Numbers and Constraints Some of the questions will have number answers. The keyboard will change to numbers. For Question #3, the answer is 26. The survey will not let you enter a number larger than 26! If you do, you will get this error message! 1 3.   48. Open Data Kit: Taking Photos 3. The next screen functions like a camera. The camera lens is on the back of the phone. 4. Move the camera around until you are happy with your photo. 5. When you are ready to take the photo, click on either the middle button of the silver button on the bottom right hand side. 6. Click on “DONE” if you are happy with the photo. If you want to take a different photo, click on the camera button. 3 4 5 6
