Insect Facts

Insects are the most numerous and diverse group of animals on Earth, with estimates of 20 to 30 million species. They make up 90% of all animal species, and in the U.S. and Canada alone, 92,000 species have been identified. Among insect extremes, the fairyfly is the smallest at just 0.007 inches, while the African Goliath beetle is the heaviest at 3.5 ounces. The tropical stick insect holds the record for the longest at 14 inches, and the Hercules moth exhibits the largest surface area with 110 square inches of wingspan.
