Downloading VIIRS Data Go to NOAA class website: http://www.nsof.class.noaa.gov/saa/products/welcome Register for NOAA Make sure you are always logged in when downloading data Go to the drop box at the top of the window and choose NPP Visible/InfraredImager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Select your study area by drawing a rectangular box. Edit the coordinates in the box on the right. Keep the coordinates within 2.5° of eachother because the swath is so big Select the dates you would like to download. Keep in mind that VIIRS takes data multiple times a day and cannot load more than a couple week’s data at one time

Downloading VIIRS data: Times Select the times you need in the boxes on the right marked Start time and End time Note that the times are in UTC, so you may need to do a conversion For night images (Day/Night band and M13) enter 00:00:00 for start and 15:00:00 for end For aerosol optical thickness, or other daytime bands make sure the start time is after 15:00:00
  4. Downloading VIIRS Data For Day/ Night band select day/night band and its Geolocation. For Fire Band, select M13 band and the moderate band Geolocation. For Aerosol Optical Thickness, select the AOT band and its Geolocation To create a VIIRS burn scar the appropriate bands must be selected: Imagery Band 2- (I2) Moderate Bands 4 &11- (M4 and M11) After selecting the appropriate bands select the coordinating geolocations : (VIIRS Image Bands SDR Ellipsoid Geolocation and VIIRS Moderate Bands SDR Geolocation )
  5. Placing the order for the data Use the screen to select the bands and geolocationsyou want and then click update at the top of the page to add data to your cart. After updating the page, select place order. After the ordered is placed await the email confirming that “Processing is complete” Once processing is complete follow the link provided in the email to download images. Create a VIIRs Data Folder and save all images to this folder.

Uploading Images into ArcMap Open ArcMap and click on tools, add tool and add the Develop Toolbox from the develop exchange Click on VIIRS GRID tool Click the folder by HDF file to find the file you downloaded from NOAA For array name, chose Reflectance for Moderate bands and Imagery bands taken during the day and Radiance if working with the Day/Night band or Moderate bands at night. For Aerosol Optical Thickness, choose Aerosol Optical Depth at 550 nm

Uploading images into ArcMap For pixel size, enter .0034 for Imagery bands and Aerosol Optical Thickness and .0067 for Moderate bands Extent should be set as default unless your swath is too big in which case you can select a file here to locate your study area from the swath Browse your computer for a place to save the output and name it without using spaces
  8. Uploading images into ArcMap Select Add Data Then select the same icon and add a shape file of your study area Once a shape file is added, reselect the add data button and locate the Output folder. Add the VIIRS file that was saved to the output folder. Your image/band should appear Repeat the steps for the remaining 2 Bandsif processing a VIIRS burn scar image.
  9. Final products Aerosol Optical Thickness with color reel changed to purple gradient. Use min-max under layer properties to adjust the numbers based on the identify tool to show more of a difference in color.
  10. Final products The Fire Band (M13) showing the high temperature of the fire compared to the low surface temperature of the landscape. This eliminates the confusion surrounding the Day/Night band by only showing the fire. Adjust based on identity tool and min-max. The Day/Night band showing the level of light coming off of the Earth. Includes BOTH fires and city lights.

Processing the Burn Scar Once all bands are open they must be composited Composite the bands by holding the control button and selecting all 3 of the bands that are displayed in the Image Analysis Window. Once all bands are highlighted in blue select the composite bands button near the bottom of the Image Analysis window. Make sure your are selecting the correct dates and bands. ArcMAP will composite the bands and display the map once it is finished processing. The Burn Scar should then be available for viewing.
  12. Final products The above burn scars were produced of the Deschutes County Study Area. The red dot in Figure 1 indicates where the fire began burning. The green in Figure 2 represents the smoke that is being produced, and the maroon in Figure 3 is representative of the burn scar.
