  5. Summary • The king’s youngest daughter likes to sit by the well and toss her golden ball. • One day it falls into the well and she begins to cry. • A frog appears and asks her what’s wrong. • He offers to go get it if she would love him and have him for her companion. • She promises that he can have whatever he’d like.

  6. So the frog retrieves her ball, and she runs off without him. • The next day as she’s sitting at dinner, they hear a knock on the door, and it’s the frog. He demands to be let in. • The princess does not want to, but the King commands her to, as she promised she would. • So she picks him up and brings him to dinner. • He then demands to be allowed to sleep in her bed, as she had promised. She becomes full of anger and throws him against the wall. • As he hits the wall and falls, he turns into a prince. • Eventually they became engaged, and as the spell that the witch put on the Prince is now gone, his faithful servant Henry (Heinrich) returns.

  7. Heinrich was so distraught when the Prince disappeared that he had put three iron bands over his heart to keep it from breaking. • As the Prince returned, and Heinrich was leading the carriage, the bands around his heart began to break, for he was so relieved and happy.

  8. (The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids) • Die alteGeiss • Die siebenjungeGeisslein • Der Wolf • rauheStimme • schwarzePfote • Wackersteine

  9. Summary • The old goat had to go into the forest to get food. She warned her children of the wolf, and as he often tries to disguise himself, always be aware of his hoarse voice and black paws. • Sure enough, he came to the house and they knew it was him by his hoarse voice. So he went to the store and bought a lump of chalk and ate it to try and make his voice softer.

  10. The next time he approached, his voice was different, but as he had put his paws on the window and the kids saw they were black, they didn’t let him in. • So he went to the baker to get dough spread on his paws and then the miller to get white meal. • When he returned the final time, his voice was different and his paws were white, so the kids let him in.

  11. When they saw it was the wolf, they all chose different hiding spots, but the wolf gobbled them all up, except for the youngest. • The mother returned and called out the names of every kid, only the youngest replied. • In her grief, they wandered outside and saw the wolf sleeping – but his stomach was moving! • The little one ran home to grab shears, a needle, and thread.

  12. He returned, the mother cut open the wolf’s stomach and out sprang each of her kids, since the wolf was greedy and had swallowed them whole. • She filled his stomach with stones and sewed him up. • As he awoke and wanted a drink of water, he drowned because the stones made him sink.

  13. (Cinderella) • Einreicher Mann – derVater • Aschenputtel • Das Grab • ZweiStieftöchter • EinweißesVöglein • Das Taubenhaus • DerGarten • Die Zehe • Die Ferse

  14. Summary • A rich man’s wife dies and her only daughter is left behind. He remarries the following year to a women with two daughters. • These two girls force the young girl to become a kitchen-maid and because she is always dusty and dirty from cleaning, they name her Cinderella (Aschenputtel).

  15. Her father attends a fair one day and brings home what Cinderella has asked for – a twig. • Cinderella plants the twig at her mother’s grave and visits it 3 times a day. Her tears turn the twig into a tree and with this tree, one always sees a white bird, who grants Cinderella’s every wish.

  16. The King plans a 3-day festival for his son to find a bride. • Cinderella wants to attend, but her step-mother won’t allow it. She challenges Cinderella to pick out a dish full of lentils from the ashes in an hour and then she may go. • Cinderella calls all her bird friends to help and they do. • The step-mother still says no.

  17. She challenges her again, now two plates in an hour. The birds help, and she accomplishes it. Yet the step-mother still says no. • Everyone leaves for the party and Cinderella goes to her mother’s grave and cries. • The white bird appears and gives Cinderella a dress of gold and silver and a pair of silver slippers. • No one recognizes her at the party and the prince chooses her as his partner.

  18. As he tries to walk her home, she escapes and jumps into the pigeon-house. They can’t find her as she had escaped back into the kitchen in her old clothes. • Day two of the festival, she returns and again breaks away, running off into the garden this time, and again they can’t find her.

  19. Day 3 of the festival, the prince now lays a plan to trap her. He spreads tar on the steps so that as she runs away her left shoe becomes stuck. • As the Prince goes to the house the next morning to find the girl who matches the shoe, the eldest tries it on first. Her big toe won’t fit, so her mother tells her to cut it off. She does and returns to the prince. As they head off the two pigeons cry out that she’s the false bride, and as he sees the blood her returns her home.

  20. The next step-daughter tries it on and her heel does not fit. Her mother again tells her to cut it off, and she does. As they head off, the pigeons again cry out that she’s the false bride, so he returns her home. • The prince asks if the father has any other daughters, so Cinderella is beckoned. She tries on the shoe and it fits perfectly. • As they ride off, the pigeons sing out that she is indeed the right bride!

  21. When the wedding day arrives, the step sisters are part of the procession, the oldest on her right and the younger on her left. As they proceed, the pigeons pick out an eye of each of them. And as they returned, the older on the left and younger on the left, the pigeons picked out the other eye of each of them. • So they were condemned to be blind for the rest of their days because of their wickedness and falsehood.

  22. (The Bremen City Musicians) • DerEsel • DerJagdhund • Die Katze • DerHaushahn • Die Räuber

  23. Summary • A donkey who worked at a mill at last was too old for his job. Fearing his master would kick him out, he ran away, taking the road to Bremen in hopes of becoming a town musician there. • On the road, he saw a hound, also too old and unable to hunt, so he had run away from his master, who would have killed him. • The hound joined the donkey towards Bremen.

  24. On their journey they next meet a cat, whose teeth are too blunt to hunt mice anymore, so her master wanted to drown her and she ran away. • She joins them as well. • They next meet a rooster, who is also in trouble with his master and is crowing with all his might before he is to be made into soup. • So he runs away with them.

  25. As they came to the woods to rest, the rooster sees a light off in the distance and they head that direction. • They see a house and the donkey looks in. • He sees a table set out with lots of food and drink, as well as robbers sitting at the table. • They come up with a plan.

  26. The donkey will be first, with the dog on the donkey’s back, then the cat, and lastly the rooster. • They then planned on making music to get the robbers’ attention. • The robbers were scared and ran off, leaving everything in the house to the four animals.

  27. As they laid down to sleep, each in a different location, the robbers noticed no lights and decided to return to their house. They sent one man to check it out first. • As he entered the house, he went to strike a light by the fire, scared the cat who jumped and scratched his face; he then stumbled over the dog by the door who bit his leg; running out into the yard he ran into the donkey who kicked him; and waking the rooster with all the racket, he started crowing as loud as he could.

  28. The robber returned to his partners telling them stories of a witch who scratched him with her nails, a man who stabbed him in the leg with a knife, a monster who beat him with a wooden club, and a judge who screamed “Bring him to me!” • So the robbers never returned, and the four town musicians lived happily in the house.

  30. Summary • A tailor had three sons and one goat. The goat supported the family with her milk, and therefore needed to eat well. It was the sons’ job to make sure she did. • Each of the sons took her to good locations to eat, and when she had finished, they each asked if she’d had enough and she said yes. But when the tailor asked upon their return, she said she had nothing. So he had driven out each son in turn. • So the tailor took her to a good location to eat himself, and asked her if she’d had enough, and she said yes. As he asked again when they returned home, she said exactly what she had told the sons, that she had had nothing. So the tailor now felt bad for what had happened to his sons and decided to get rid of the goat. He shaved her head and horsewhipped her till she ran away.

  31. Each of the sons had taken to finding an apprenticeship. • The eldest went to become a carpenter. Before he left the apprenticeship, his master gave him a gift. It was a little table made of common wood, but if it was set out, and one said “Tischchen, deck dich!” it would become full of food and drink.

  32. As the eldest decided to head home and show his father what he’d become and the gift he’d earned, he stopped at an inn. • He decided to share his gift with the inn’s guests, and they all enjoyed a wonderful meal. • The innkeeper however traded out the magical table for a plain table as the son slept.

  33. When the son arrived at his father’s and asked him to call all the relatives so he could show them his table and they could enjoy an amazing meal, his father was overjoyed by his return. • When the relatives arrived, the table, however, did not work…

  34. The second son went to become a miller. As he left to journey forth, the master gave him a donkey. If the donkey is placed on a cloth, and one says “Bricklebrit,” the donkey will spit out gold coins, from front and back. • As the son was journeying home, he stopped at the same inn as his brother had…

  35. As he went to pay, the innkeeper asked for more gold than he had in his pockets. So the son asked him to wait as he went to get more money. The innkeeper of course was intrigued and followed him out to the barn. He saw what the donkey could do, and as the son slept, he again traded out the magical donkey for a regular donkey.

  36. When the son arrived at his father’s and asked him to call all the relatives so he could show them his donkey and make them rich, his father was overjoyed by his return. • When the relatives arrived, the donkey, however, did nothing…

  37. The third son had gone forth to become a wood turner (shapes wood). His brothers, however, had written him a letter forewarning him of the innkeeper and how he had cheated them. • When the son was ready to leave, his master presented him with a gift as well. It was a sack, and within it was a cudgel. If anyone does wrong to him, all he needs to say is “Out of the sack, Cudgel!” and it will beat them senseless until he says “Into the sack, Cudgel!”

  38. As the third son journeyed home, he stopped at the same inn, knowing what to expect. • He told the innkeeper that people may find magic tables or donkeys easily, and nothing compares to the treasure in his sack. • As he went to sleep, he laid his head on the sack, and as expected, the innkeeper tried to slip the sack out and replace it with another. • The son was waiting for this and yelled, “Out of the sack, Cudgel!” The innkeeper was in for a beating.

  39. The son made the innkeeper promise to return the other two items before he would stop the cudgel. The innkeeper obliged. • The son said, “I will let mercy take the place of justice, but beware of getting into mischief again!” • As the son returned home, he proved to his father and relatives that the other sons had received the magical gifts and they all enjoyed the most wonderful dinner and became very rich.

  40. What happened to the goat?? • Well, she was ashamed of her bald head, so she ran into a fox’s hole and hid there. • The fox returned and saw her shining eyes and ran scared. He ran into a bear and told him his problems. • The bear went to the hole and also saw the fiery eyes and fear took over him and he ran. • The bear met with the bee as he was running and the bee said he would take care of it. • So she flew into the fox’s den, stung the goat’s head so violently that she jumped up and ran out of the den. • ….No one knows where she is now!
